Mark Rolston is that bad-looking guy you usually see in a movie that you wouldn’t ever associate with and definitely wouldn’t want to stand next to. He does play other roles but more often than not they’re not entirely kind roles or those that endear him to the other characters. He has that kind of sinister look that says he’s just someone you wouldn’t want to get mad or be alone with in a locked room. That however means that he is a superb actor and can create an emotional response with the audience and make them absolutely hate his character. In real life he’s supposedly a nice guy and a family man.
Here are a few things you might not know about him.
5. He knew he wanted to be an actor at age 9.
How many people know at the age of 9 what they really want to be? A lot of folks will change their mind at least two or three times during their childhood and maybe even one or two more times once they hit high school. There are those however that are so convinced of what they want to do that nothing will deter them and they’ll keep their course until they get what they were after.
4. He was asked by 5 different schools to attend.
That’s some serious talent if schools actually want to compete for your attendance. It’s a pretty rare thing that anyone gets accepted to more than a couple schools, let alone five. He had a big decision to make and eventually selected the Drama Centre London, where he spent five years studying and finally graduated, beginning his run towards a full-fledged career as an actor.
3. He decided to take his career and studies to Europe.
There’s no real explanation for this other than the fact that it seemed the best way to fulfill his dream of being an actor. After all most good theater comes from Europe where the craft happened to have originate. Where better to learn how to act than from those that had such a long and storied history with the craft? This could be why his career took off the way it did.
2. He usually plays villains.
Rolston has that low, gravelly voice and sinister look that when he gets into character is nothing short of creepy and terrifying. In Shawshank Redemption he was absolutely brutal, and to be honest it was probably his most disturbing role out of all he’s done since he became an actor. Something about the way he played the role managed to creep a lot of people out.
1. Acting is his sole motivation when doing the job.
The job alone should be one of the most important things that gets a person going when they’re working. If you don’t like your job, like so many people, then it’s a daily grind that can get old very quickly. Rolston is very happy doing what he does and finds motivation in every role he takes.
He’s got the bad guy vibe down perfectly.
