In a world where Google, IMDb and various other platforms exist to tell about an individual it’s really hard to know how much people know about celebrities nowadays. Before the internet became such a popular medium of knowledge (yes, there was such a time) it was easy to not know a single thing about your favorite actor or director. Now, all you have to do is type in their name and you can find out anything they’re willing to reveal online. With some people it’s not much, but with others they’ll give you their life story if you just ask.
So here is what you may or may not about Edgar Wright.
5. He likes to use repeated snippets of dialogue for comedic effect.
You know when the characters in certain movies tend to repeat themselves or one another for seemingly no purpose other than to be funny or annoying? That’s not mprov or an accident, it’s actually a part of the script, and it’s a trick that Wright likes to employ for laughs as it makes the moment seem a bit lighter no matter what the situation is. You have to admit, the effect does make you shake your head and grin at least a little bit.
4. He’s an English director.
Born and raised in Dorset, England, Wright has had a successful career thus far as a director. But he’s also been a producer and an actor. In fact he’s had cameos in such films as Land of the Dead, and was actually considered to direct Star Trek: Beyond as as well Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
3. He likes to work primarily with Shaun Pegg and Nick Frost.
If you couldn’t tell he has his favorite actors just like any director. Wright enjoys and even prefers working with Shaun Pegg and Nick Frost, and has featured them both in three of his best movies. Those are Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. Pegg and Frost have both been heard to say that they enjoy working with Wright, though he is a bit of a perfectionist.
2. The fence jump that goes wrong.
This is one of Wright’s favorite gags in all of his films. It is featured at least once in all of his films and almost never goes right. One might think that jumping a fence is child’s play, and for the most part it is, but really, when you’re running towards a fence without any idea of what’s on the other side, it might pay to slow up and take a look over the top first. Of course that wouldn’t be as funny.
1. A lot of his most important scenes take place in a bar or a pub.
Watch his three biggest films and you’ll notice this right away. In Shaun of the Dead their lives seem to revolve around the Winchester, while in Hot Fuzz the big turning point comes in the pub. And of course, The World’s End takes place in several, culminating finally at the actual pub that’s the namesake for the film. Wright seems to love revelations and stunning plot points that take place in pubs.
You might have known a few of these things about Wright, but unless you’re some kind of superfan it’s safe to say there’s a few things you didn’t. Now you know, and knowing makes things that much more interesting.
