Five Things You Didn’t Know about Colin O’Donoghue

As of right now, especially with season 7 of Once Upon A Time looming closer and closer as October comes around, it’s easier to keep in mind the vision of O’Donoghue has played for the last several seasons. He’s been known to state that while he does his best to portray the dreaded pirate turned aimless rogue turned ally he still doesn’t equate his role with one of the greatest to ever play the hook-handed pirate, Dustin Hoffman. It is true that Hoffman gave the role of [easyazon_link identifier=”B01E621DEY” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]James Hook[/easyazon_link] a rather devilish quality that’s hard to completely top, but O’Donoghue has definitely been playing the pirate captain with an air of relish and skill that is hard to deny. Despite this the role is hardly the only one he’s ever done, but it is the one that is gaining him the most attention at the moment.

Here are few other things you might not know about the man.

5. Despite sounding English he is Irish.

He pulls off an English accent with great ease doesn’t he? However he was born and raised in Drogheda, County Louth, which is lauded as one of the oldest towns in Ireland. How Colin manages to hide his trademark Irish accent is quite simple as he is an actor and has been trained throughout his career in how to modulate his voice and incorporate different speech patterns.

4. He was in a band.

He was at one time a member of The Enemies, a band that was formed in his hometown and managed to gain at least a bit of local fame. Colin’s role was as a guitarist and background vocals. He stayed with the band for a number of years until around 2013 when he left to go film Once Upon A Time. And the rest, as they say, is history.

3. He was a contender to play [easyazon_link identifier=”B00AZ15WVQ” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]Superman[/easyazon_link].

Can you imagine the same man playing Hook as the man of steel? He was one of the top contenders no matter that he doesn’t seem like he’d be a good fit for the role. Eventually he was beat out by Henry Cavill, and the rest you already know.

2. He has a fascination with animatronics and special effects.

Since he was a boy Colin admits that he has had a deep and abiding love for all things special effects. He was amazed as a child to see how things worked and how impressively they were used in films. One of his favorites was The Dark Crystal, a Jim Hensen classic that many children have grown with throughout the years.

1. His character, [easyazon_link identifier=”B009KWU6Q2″ locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]Hook[/easyazon_link], is the polar opposite of his real personality.

As Hook he gets to cut loose and play the bad boy of the bunch, the guy that will go to the lengths that traditional heroes just don’t get to do. Funny enough he admits that in real life he is actually fairly quiet and does not act in any way like Captain Hook.

One can only imagine how his role in this next season of Once Upon A Time is going to change.
