After a tough Season 8 of “The Walking Dead”, the series jumps ahead a year and a half. We find that Alexandria and the other communities are rebuilding themselves after the war against Negan and the Saviors. Rick has a different view on what should be done than many of his closest friends. The first few episodes of Season 9 show Rick arguing with his friends on what should be done to move forward and unite the communities. We also see women coming into more power. Of course we know to expect Rick’s departure from “The Walking Dead”.
Here are 5 pivotal moments from “The Walking Dead” Season 9.
1. Gregory’s Execution
With a new show runner for Season 9, Angela Kang, it seems that “The Walking Dead” is taking some bold new moves to boost ratings after Season 8’s war theme. Fans of the show are excited to see a focus on women in power. Of course, there have always been powerful women on the show, but it seems the women actually have power. Maggie is now the leader of Hilltop and she’s making her authority known. She wants to kill Negan despite Rick’s protests. She destroys his baseball bat/weapon “Lucille”. However reluctant Maggie is to kill, she does what she feels is necessary. When former Hilltop leader Gregory plots to kill Maggie, she has him executed. She may not like doing ordering it, but she takes a stand and does what is necessary for the good of her people.
2. The Museum
In the first early episode of Season 9 of “The Walking Dead”, the group heads to Washington DC and explore a history museum. They haul away a canoe, a wagon and a plow hoping to enhance their agrarian society. Gabriel impales a walker against a display about the evolution of man. He and Anne take a moment to look at the new addition to the display and note the irony of it ending with a walker. It’s a small moment but very poignant considering the post apocalyptic world they live in now.
3. Carol
Carol is one of the characters of “The Walking Dead” who has changed the most. When she started out in Season 1 of the series, she was an abused wife. When she lost her daughter, she was ready to give up. However, Carol evolved into one of the strongest characters on the show. She continues to evolve in Season 9. When the season opens we find that a year and a half have passed. Carol is now living in the Kingdom and is in a serious relationship with Ezekiel. Carol discusses her relationship with Daryl. Some fans of the show have always wanted Carol and Daryl to get together, but they are friends. They always look out for each other, and its a wonderful relationship. Daryl is genuinely happy that his friend has found love.
4. Daryl vs Rick
Daryl and Rick have been through a lot together since the beginning of “The Walking Dead”. They have a close bond and consider themselves as brothers. Unfortunately since Season 8, the pair’s relationship has become strained. Daryl and Rick had differing views on the how to handle the war against the Saviors. They continue to have differing views on what the fate of Negan should be. While Rick believes Negan should live in prison, Daryl agrees with Maggie that Negan should be killed. Rick and Daryl argue their different views on the subject while stuck in a pit together. Daryl makes it clear that he will go with Maggie. They do make up, and Daryl gives Rick a ride to the site of the bridge so that Rick can get rid of the walker horde. Daryl tells Rick to “be safe”, but unfortunately, this might be the last time he sees Rick alive.
5. Rick’s Imminent Death
It’s no secret that Andrew Lincoln has chosen to leave his role of Rick Grimes on “The Walking Dead” after 9 seasons. It’s difficult for fans of the series to accept being that the show has revolved around Rick since its first episode. Throughout the years, Rick has been a leader, a hero, a father and a friend. Fans of the show are just hoping that “The Walking Dead” lets Rick go out in style. At the end of Episode 4 “The Obliged”, Rick, ever the hero, is is riding a white horse trying to lead hordes of walkers away to protect the bridge. The horse is spooked and Rick falls off. He lands on a piece of concrete and is impaled by a piece of rebar. It’s hard to believe Rick will survive. Fans expected a big send off for the character but most assumed that it would happen in the mid-season finale not just a handful of episodes into the season.
