Five Movies to Watch If You Like Interstellar

Interstellar is one of those movies that people can’t seem to agree about since some folks have decided that it’s an insightful and very amusing movie that entertained as well as informed a lot of them about the kind of issues and hypothetical’s that the earth could be facing one day. But while the dissenters decided to claim that the science wasn’t entirely accurate and the movie itself was a little too filled with plot holes to be enjoyable, they tend to miss the same point that many moviegoers and critics alike miss at times; it’s a movie. It’s not meant to be taken entirely serious, otherwise it might be deemed as a documentary and given a little more factual data to go on rather than science fiction that so many people love to watch. Of course there are going to be inconsistencies here and there, it’s a part of the movie experience. But if you liked Interstellar and know how to watch a movie for what it is there are a lot of other movies you might enjoy as well.

Here’s a list of just a few movies that you might find agreeable if Interstellar was agreeable.

5. Moon

I’m going to go ahead and agree with Tom Philip of GQ on this one that Moon was impressive, especially with a very low budget and only one principle actor in the entire movie. Sam Rockwell has been constantly proving just how great he is throughout the years and this is a definite testament to his acting ability. As an astronaut that’s assigned to the moon to drill for an alternate fuel source he’s contracted for three years to stay on the moon, but when he finds a stranded moon crawler and finds an unconscious individual that looks just like him it would seem that he’s stumbled onto a conspiracy that rocks his world as he soon finds out that he’s not the original astronaut that was sent to the moon, and that he and the rest of the clones that are waiting to be activated are part of a scheme to keep him working and keep the fuel resource flowing.

4. Stargate

Stargate had a lot more potential to explore Egyptian mythology and how it connected to the movie in general but it felt a little rushed since it had to pack in so much in such a little amount of time. If this had been two movies instead of one, or a trilogy, it would have been a little better. As it stands the movie wasn’t all that bad since it does involve space travel, great action scenes, and a plot twist that’s not entirely complicated but does put a decent spin on humanity since it would seem that the stargates were used to ferry humanity from one location to another so that Ra and his people could make use of them on various worlds as slaves. Keeping them illiterate of course was one of the smartest things to do, since those that don’t remember the true history and can’t read it will sometimes accept the reality they’re given, no matter how horrible it is.

3. Oblivion

No matter what the numbers say the reviews for this movie were pretty mixed since a lot of people liked it considering that it’s got Tom Cruise and there was plenty of action, while some just didn’t get the whole premise. The idea is that the aliens that destroyed earth pretty much wiped out humanity, forcing them to colonize one of Jupiter’s moons, Titan. the unfortunate thing is that this is a lie, and the aliens that wiped out humanity, almost, are the same ones that are keeping Jack and Victoria around as maintenance techs for the drones that are used to hunt down and kill any problems they find. The ‘problems’ as it turns out though are humans that have been surviving for decades in an attempt to finally take their world back, and when Jack discovers this unsettling fact his entire world is turned upside down.

2. 2001: A Space Odyssey

It wouldn’t be a list without the movies featuring rogue AI and alien artifacts that tend to shape and influence humanity. In this movie, which takes a while to get going honestly, a mission to Jupiter is nearly sabotaged as HAL decides to take matters into its own hands, so to speak, and attempts to kill the entire crew to avoid being shut down. When the remaining crew member shuts Hal down he discovers the real mission was to locate another monolith like the one that was found on earth and check out the signal that is coming from it. Once he does this he experiences what could only be called one of the most existential mind trips in the history of science fiction movies.

1. The Martian

On one hand his crew left him for dead because his vitals signs had stopped after he was struck by debris during a nasty storm. On the other they weren’t even told he was alive at first when he started sending signals to indicate as much. Once they discovered that he was alive however they were fully intent on coming to get him, since despite his titanic efforts to stay alive, the lone astronaut on Mars was still running out of options. His perseverance was insane and impressive all at once, but the fact that he made it home was inspiring. According to Dr. Robert Zubrin writing for The Guardian this movie was pretty accurate in some ways but kind of shaky in others.

There are a few others you might like if you enjoyed Interstellar, but these are the most recommended.
