Five Moments that Defined “Elementary” Season 6

The sixth season of the CBS television series “Elementary” was an exciting ride with ups and downs that kept viewers on an emotional roller coaster ride. There were so many touching moments as well as those that were funny and uplifting. Both Watson and Holmes experience their share of personal revelations, and there were more than a few that they shared together. The scenes have been so well crafted that we see the relationship between them heading in a more definite direction towards love, but it’s carried through in a series of tantalizing scenes that are equally interspersed with stark seriousness mixed with hilarity. Here are five moments that defined Season 6.

1. Joan Watson gets life altering information

When Joan learns that her therapist is murdered, she is taken back to the time when she got access to her file. The therapist had mentioned in her notes that Joan would make a good mother. This made her reflect on the fact that her father had schizophrenia and it could be passed on to a child through genetics. Watson begins to think about what she has been missing out on by not having children. It adds a new dimension and twist to the multi-faceted character and we wonder if her relationship with Sherlock Holmes could have anything to do with her musings about parenthood?

2. Holmes realization and admission of a problem

A pivotal moment in the sixth season came in the first episode when Dr. Watson confronts Holmes about his bizarre behavior after the death of his associate. In this gripping scene, Watson tells him he’s been acting like a “jerk” and goes on to point out how he avoided her for weeks after she attempted to talk about the difference in his demeanor and actions. Holmes finally gives a partial answer to her query and admits that “I’m not well.” This is a realization that he’s not as in control as he once was and it takes the season in a new direction. This is the one things that could take the dynamic pair down. Prior to the onset of headaches and episodes where his memory becomes hazy, Holmes had maintained the utmost confidence in his reasoning abilities, until now.

3. First signs of trouble

As Watson and Holmes become involved in a potential nuclear threat to the city, Holmes begins to show some severe symptoms which temporarily debilitate him. This is unusual for him and the scene foreshadows some rather dramatic events which are yet to unfold. This is a moment in the sixth season that defines the direction that the character of Holmes will take with the ups and downs he experiences due to health complications which are to later be revealed.

4. Medical test reveal Holmes’ condition and he tells Watson

Besieged with moments of forgetfulness, headaches, dizziness, confusion and even hallucinations, Holmes goes to see a doctor. After a battery of tests are completed, the test results show that he has a condition that is known as Post Concussion Syndrome. This is what is responsible for his bizarre, and at times, unacceptable behaviors. There are two things that this scene does to add to the definition of the series. It as a new dimension to the character of Holmes, causing him to question his abilities to function at peak intellectually, and it shows a strengthening of the relationship between him and Watson.

5. The Finale

This is perhaps the most gripping scene that has ever been filmed within the series. In this episode, titled, “Whatever Remains,” Sherlock Holmes made the ultimate sacrifice for
his partner, Dr. Joan Watson, by submitting a false confession for the crime of murder. Joan was a suspect in the crime and Holmes did this to take the suspicion off of her. Of course, he wasn’t really guilty of the crime. Instead of a lengthy prison sentence, or an even more harsh punishment, he avoided sentencing in an agreement to leave the United States and return to Britain. This changes the location for the upcoming season seven, taking place in a more traditional setting for the character of Holmes.
