The afro has been a popular hairstyle for some time now. Even in this current decade you can see it now and again as people decide to let their hair grow out and even go so far as to tease it up so that it resembles the old style. In the movies it used to be one of the most natural things to see, but it was definitely something you saw more in African-American men and women than anyone else. A lot of people have tried to rock this style over the years but not too many have really ever made it work like the classics did. In movies there were really on a few good afros that can be remembered fondly.
Here are those films in which afros were one of the best parts of the character.
5. Jim Kelly – Enter The Dragon
One of the fun things to know about Jim Kelly is that he was as legit as they came when it had to do with karate. He’s actually a former champion from 1971 in the middleweight division. Kelly passed away about four years go unfortunately but while he was around he was all about the attitude and definitely about the fro. The one good thing it seems about an afro, other than that it looks cool, is that it definitely doesn’t shift that much when you’re fighting.
4. Kurd – Take The Lead
I wouldn’t call Kurd despicable by any means but he was definitely not the favorite character in this film. He was still endearing though even considering that he tried way too hard to be all gangsta with his look and his attitude. Once he undid the corn rows and let his dark red locks out he looked pretty fly with his big fro bouncing around on top of his head. Leave the corn rows to the guys that can pull off that look.
3. Pam Grier – Foxy Brown
No one messed with Foxy Brown in her day. Well, people definitely tried but they regretted soon after. You could say she was mean or just nasty at times but she usually had a reason to be. She was Foxy Brown after all, you didn’t mess with her unless you were looking for trouble.
2. Rembrandt – The Warriors
Not many people seem to recall this movie but it was one of the classics that has been remembered by a few over the years. Rembrandt was a member of the Warriors and one of the only ones to make it through the city after their gang was framed for the murder of another. He wasn’t the strongest or the most effective but he had his uses and his skills.
1. Eddie Griffin – Undercover Brother
&t=248s
You mess with the fro, you got to go. Undercover Brother was not a film that was received with much more than a grin and a thumbs down at the box office, but it is a genuinely funny film. Eddie Griffin puts in a fairly solid performance despite the fact that the movie is undoubtedly a spoof on several other parts of African-American culture and its interaction with white America.
There have been a lot afro-wearing characters in films, but some of the best you never forget.
