Five Great Storylines on “Gold Rush” That Don’t Involve Gold

How many people actually think of the work and effort it takes to bring us the gold that we use and like flash as bling on a regular basis? I’m guessing the average person won’t think a single thing about and likely doesn’t even know that a show like Gold Rush exists. But while a lot of this show is likely real and some of it might be staged, as reality shows are known to do from time to time, the work that goes into seems to be all too realistic as we get to watch the crews live out more than one story line that isn’t all about the gold. Where these guys are digging and the challenges they have to go through are considerations that many people never seem to think about when they’re putting on that gold watch or admiring anything that has that gold sheen to it. After watching this show you might think a little differently in terms of where it comes from and what went into obtaining it.

Here are some of the best episodes of the show that weren’t all about gold.

5. Season 4 Ep10-Hope Creek

The gold is only a small part of the show despite being a big reason why anyone is out in the wild trying to find it. In fact a lot of the show has to do with the equipment and being able to get it to where it needs to be in order to excavate the gold. The effort that’s needed and the equipment that is required for the endeavors of each crew is non-negotiable since unless they want to start digging with their own hands and sifting in the old fashioned way they need to find out how to get their equipment up roads, make new roads when they have to, and then find out how to get their equipment unstuck in those unlucky events that just tend to happen.

4. Season 3 Ep5-The Ultimatum

The problems that keep mounting on each site are pretty much par for the course it would seem since on one site an investor is looking over the entire area and figuring that he made a bad investment, while on another site the equipment keeps breaking down. Then on another site they have to focus on constructing a bridge to get and forth so that the operation can continue working without any further delays. The overall feeling is that there is little but disaster when things aren’t going right, and it’s possible that the crews are spending more money than they’re bound to make.

3. Season 2 Ep9-Cameramen-Behind the Scenes-Special

Being a part of the camera crew on this show isn’t bound to be easy since in order to get some of the best shots the crew has to be in the way at times and can risk really ticking off the mining crews, who are already under enough stress as it is. Then comes the idea that if a new person decides to mine the claim, the camera crew will have to move on with the miners and hope that they find a new claim or risk having nothing to film. So between being in the way, being threatened by the miners, and then being in danger when they’re in the wrong spot at the wrong moment, the camera crew are taking big risks to get the right shot so that people can watch the show.

2. Season 1 Ep2-Gold, Guns and Bears

It’s fair to say that the wilderness isn’t going to be a friendly place to those that don’t seem to belong in it, and in this episode it’s more than likely that the miners didn’t really know what they were in for when they set up shop. The trials of even setting up and getting everything ready to go are hard enough, but when nature comes a-calling in the form of brown bears it’s not something that most people would want to put their families through since bears in the wild are not the cute, cuddly beasts that they appear to be. But overall you can tell that they’ve been somewhat successful as the show has kept going.

1. Season 8 Ep19-King Kong

Rocks might not seem like a big obstacle when you think about the equipment these guys use, but when you come across a boulder the size of King Kong, as it was aptly named, it’s bound to take something other than conventional means to get it moving. The chemical that was used to split it in half had to be something extremely potent, since even dynamite doesn’t seem like it would do much more than make a serious mess without really doing much damage. But once the guys come upon the rock in the morning they find that not only has the chemical done its job, it’s flat out killed King Kong.

You might think now about where your gold is coming from.
