There’s something alluring about the Lincoln Memorial, and even the movies seems to think so. Maybe it’s the majesty of the place, the fact that Abe is looking over everything, or just the wonder of what people can do when they have something to believe in. There are those that come the memorial looking for answers, for some sort of absolution that they might not find anywhere else, and there are those that come and then just pass on by, seeing in the memorial another fine piece of American history that’s worthy of notice but can’t be allowed to take up too much of their time. When you’re in DC however the Lincoln Memorial is something worth stopping by and just admiring for a moment for your own reasons.
In the movies the site has been given a few different nods.
5. Planet of the Apes
Some people might find this offensive but in truth it’s pretty interesting to see Abe Lincoln represented in an alternate timeline in which the ape that saved his people has been immortalized in such a fashion. It doesn’t bode well for humans obviously, but then it wasn’t supposed to since we were the oppressors and the weaker race in this particular movie.
4. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
So many people talk to Abe when they walk by that it might be freaky if he talked back. In fact if he deigned to answer every last individual that spoke to him then he might never shut up. As it stands in this movie he’s a good ally to have, but an uncertain one to begin with. The only problem with Abe, that I can see in this film, is that he is incredibly honest at the most awkward of moments.
3. Wedding Crashers
I wonder if this is the hangout spot for a lot of folks that live in DC. Maybe it’s just the spot to come and talk about stuff or hash out your issues now and again when you feel the need. I’m not sure what the laws are concerning an open container in public in DC but I do know that in a lot of other places these guys might be in a spot of trouble for tying one on outside of an established watering hole.
2. Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon
It’s a good thing that this wasn’t a political statement of any kind. Even if Megatron does blast poor Abe out of his seat he doesn’t say anything about it while he does. That might have been taken the wrong way, and in fact just this act could have angered a few people since the Lincoln Memorial is something that’s supposed to be sacrosanct. But like I said, it wasn’t politically-based, I hope.
1. In The Line of Fire
Like I said this must be a popular hangout spot for folks. It could just be a favorite haunt, a place to come and unwind after a long, hard day at the office or in the field. But whatever the case it’s an impressive site to just kick back and relax.
Abe will likely listen to anything a person has to say.
