The past few decades have brought some insane advances in Artificial Intelligence and filmmakers have capitalized on the possibilities of what may one day exist in real life. Some of the scariest supercomputers in movies have had the capability to reason and even take over the world. And now, in our society, it’s getting to the point that even the most brilliant minds in the world like Elon Musk are worried that these movie scenarios might one day become real.
Here are five of the coolest fictional super computers in movies.
1. HAL 9000 – “[easyazon_link identifier=”B000GOUXES” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]2001: A Space Odyssey[/easyazon_link]”
Stanley Kubric and Arthur C Clarke brought to life, one of the most capable and evil forms of artificial intelligence in HAL 9000. HAL went from being one of the best helpers and guides for the crew aboard a spaceship, but the mission that was programmed into its databanks was hidden from the crew. This crazy supercomputer took it upon itself to begin termination of the humans because it deemed them to be “fallible.”It took astronaut David Bowman a great effort to eventually unplug the brain functions of the AI killing machine.
2. Eddie and Marvin – “[easyazon_link identifier=”B003QSJVGW” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy[/easyazon_link]”
This comedy about the cosmos included two supercomputers . Marvin was an Android that had paranoid tendencies and serves as the onboard computer the ship along with the main computer for the ship named Eddie. Marvin resented the humans who were in charge of him. Eddie is just the opposite. he is a happy form of AIwho likes to please the humans in charge. These two fictional supercomputers are a part of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation who both are programmed to have personalities like people.
3.GlaDOS – “Portal”
This is one smart aleck supercomputer. GlaDOS comes from the “Portal” game franchise brought to live in this film. He has a mega attitude, but this isn’t the worst part of the AI nightmare. She’s a conniver that is out to get players. Of course she has been programmed with a series of fail safe systems to prevent her from killing anybody, but since he is a supercomputer with some kick butt AI, she figures out how to get around these installations
4. Colossus – “Colossus: The Forbin Project”
This film was an adaptation of the D.F. Jones novel of the same name. Colossus is a supercomputer that is built into a bunker within a mountain. It is a government owned machine that can think for itself. It is in control of the entire nuclear arsenal for the United States of America. The movie “WarGames” picked up on this theme several years later. When Colussus detects that the same type of supercomputer from the soviets is present (Guardian), the two find a way to merge together and they take over the world, threatening to produce a nuclear war.
5. David 8 – “Prometheus”
Michael Fassbender plays the role of the AI powered David 8. He is one of the coolest supercomputers we’ve seen on film. He is suave, handsome, polite, highly skilled and competent. He is the ideal first mate for the ship. He is assisting with a mission to discover more about an alien world. He has a secret agenda that the crew doesn’t know about. There are things that he wants to do for himself and this causes some serious issues. This is just one of the problems that you run into when you install artificial intelligence into a machine. It’s worse when you make them good looking.
