Very sad news to report today from the Supernatural family, Kim Manners, Executive Producer and Director, passed away last night from lung cancer. Jim Beaver, Supernatural’s “Bobby”, shared this tragic news just a little over an hour ago via his Facebook. Jim has always been very generous with his fans; sharing his time, his writing, stories from his life, especially stories of his precious daughter, Maddie, and now the loss of “one of the best friends and best directors he has ever known”. We here at TVOvermind want to extend our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Kim Manners.
Besides Supernatural, he is best known for his work on The X-Files, where he directed more episodes than any other director. We are working on putting together a list of all the episodes of Supernatural that Kim Manners directed, but for now, we just wanted to extend our most heartfelt condolences to all of the lives that he touched, and those who will miss him so much.
I, personally, feel we have lost one of the most prolific and gifted directors of our time. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Manners in an airport one time when I was barely more than a teenager; and the time he spent with me, and the kindness he showed this girl who was excited and terrified all at the same time to be in his presence, will never be forgotten.
Update: Supernatural series creator, Eric Kripke, has released the following statement regarding the passing of Kim Manners:
Everyone at Supernatural is walking around in a daze, shocked and absolutely devastated. Kim was a brilliant director; more than that, he was a mentor and friend. He was one of the patriarchs of the family, and we miss him desperately. He gave so much to Supernatural, and everything we do on the show, now and forever, is in memory of him.

I am truly saddened by this tragic and unexpected news. Kim Manners career was a great one. For me his work on *The X-Files* introduced me to this kind and talented man. My heartfelt condolences go to his entire family. R.I.P Mr. Manners

A friend mentioned this earlier today but she couldn’t find confirmation so we hoped it was an hoax.
I am heartbroken because he was talented and seemed like the most amazing person.
RIP, Kim Manners, you’ll be truly missed.

Once Jim Beaver posts something to his facebook, you can bet it is true. He updates very regularly to let us all know what is going on with him, his daughter, Maddie, and anything else that crosses his mind.
I could not find anything on the internet about it either, but I knew it was the tragic truth because Jim had posted it…

X-Philes everywhere are mourning tonight, as I’m sure are all fans of Kim’s work. A massive loss to television. He was involved with 160 XF episodes alone, and that makes him legendary before even considering all of his other, considerable work. RIP, Kim.

I love all of the behind the scenes extras that involve Kim Manners from both the Supernatural and The X-Files DVDs. I will never forget “The Fiji Mermaid”, where Scully was supposed to eat a bug, but, of course, Kim Manners told her she didn’t REALLY have to do it. When she did, he yelled “Cut!” and proceeded to literally sprinted past, vault over, and otherwise do everything he could to make his way to Gillian as quickly as possible, and he enveloped her in a giant bear hug, and led the crew in cheers and applause for her while David Duchovny just looked like he wanted to vomit.
Another great Kim Manners moment, this time from Supernatural. Remember the episode “Bugs” and how Jared and Jensen were literally the only people on set not in bee suits, except for Kim Manners. If his actors couldn’t have bee suits, then he wasn’t going to get in one either. That says so much about the kind of man he was to me.

Smart people who like shows that make them think are sad today. What a shame. He will be truly missed and his work will live on forever in the hearts of his fans.

You are right, Sadie. We will all remember him and he will live on in our hearts through the work that he did so brilliantly. You can always tell a Kim Manners directed episode of Supernatural, he loved to get the close-ups on The Boys like no one else!
The only other director who has had as much of an impact on the show in terms of style is Robert Singer. It will fall to him to carry out the work that he started with Kim Manners, I don’t envy him having to carry on without Kim Manners. In fact, I just feel totally bereft for the entire cast and crew. Kripke and Singer, LA based, are always the first to say their man in Vancouver is, and always has been, Kim Manners, until he was taken too soon. What a terrible, terrible loss.

What a loss, the crews and actors he worked with for so many years as well as the fans will miss him very dearly. He always seemed so much a fan himself, throwing himself into the work and coming up with ways for the actors to reach a little deeper and it was always something that translated on screen. How very sad.

Thank you, Claudia. It says so much about the man that his fans in Peru are mourning his loss the same way we are here. His work was ground-breaking in the genre, and he did it better than anyone else.

I would direct anyone who wants to see more of what the man was like to hunt down a copy of the Paley Festival Supernatural panel. Kim Manners was absolutely charming, hilarious, and he was the only one on the entire panel who could keep Our Boys in line! It’s a great dvd.

I have no idea if this will get to Tana or not, but I knew Kim and Tana in college and would love to get in contact with her to express my sympathies. Kim and I had a lot of fun together when we were at the ripe age of nineteen. I was just flipping through my e-mail, and saw this notice. Please if there is anyone out there that might know how to get in touch with Kim’s sister, could you please let me know. I am so techno illiterate, I just fell into this page website. If not, maybe she might see this, and I just wanted to say how sorry I am for her and family’s loss. I will always have fond memories of Kim before his Hollywood days. Safe journey Kim, love Patty
