Victor Turpin is currently a guest star on the show Shades of Blue and is playing the role of Enrique. But there’s more to Victor than his role on the hit TV show. Luckily we got some time from Victor and he was nice enough to answer some of our questions. Here we go:
1. You grew up in Medellin. How did that influence you as an actor today?
I grew up surrounded by a loving and amazing big family, but at the same time during the 80s and 90s Medellin was a very harsh place to live. due to the “drug war.” Having a supporting, loving family that went through a lot during this time, and being in a country that was fighting for its peace made me a strong person, gave me lots of living experience, loss, and happiness. All of these moments are the ones I use today as an actor to find the character’s emotion, thoughts and reactions.
2. What drew you to acting in the first place?
My family has always been a very artistic family. My sister was a singer and my dad was a baseball player who turned into a Sports TV Host in Colombia, so I think the artistry runs in my veins.
3. Who has influenced you most as an actor?
My sister. While she’s not an actress, she’s such a strong woman that has never quit pursuing her dreams. She has inspired me to follow mine.
4. How did “Shades of Blue” first come into your life?
My manager got me the audition around July of last year. I self-taped it, sent to casting/producers, got the callback and then I got the role to go to shoot it in New York.
5. What is it like to work with Jennifer Lopez?
It’s a very fulfilling experience as a Latin artist. She is a legend in the Latin World as you can imagine, one of our biggest icons who has always fought for and represented Latinos in an industry where the opportunities for Latinos have been very limited. So, for me was a great experience and it totally showed me why she has made it so far in her career. Her professionalism, disposition and craft are on point.
6. Who is your favorite actor and why?
I’m a big big fan of Jessica Chastain. Ever since “The Help” she became my favorite actress. I think she can say so much just doing so little, effortless. I haven’t had the opportunity to work with her or meet her, but some of my friends have and they only have good things to say. Interestingly, I have just worked with the director of The Help, Tate Taylor. I am very much looking forward to seeing the finished product which stars Octavia Spencer, Allison Janney, Juliette Lewis.
7. What is your favorite movie and why?
“The Fifth Element” because when it came out it was so ground breaking, the style, the CGI, the combination of action, SciFi and humor. I watched it as a kid and keep loving it every time I watch it as an adult.
8. If you had to give advice to young aspiring actors what would it be?
Work on your craft, you never stop learning, doesn’t matter how many classes you take or how amazing they say you are, there is always something to learn. That’s one of the great things about being an actor. You never stop learning.
9. Are you working on anything we don’t know about?
At the moment, I’m doing a supporting role on a Netflix Feature but can’t talk much about it now.
10. What are your goals as an actor?
To keep learning and working with talented people and to become the best I can be as an artist.
