Sirens is one of the best comedies on television right now. The series, currently in its second season on USA Network, has heart, great characters, and most of all, is really, REALLY funny. It’s got a lot of great qualities, but one of my favorites is that the show’s uniqueness; there’s very little like it currently on television.
Recently, TVOvermind had an opportunity to talk with Kevin Bigley, who plays Brian, the lovable, goofy EMT that rounds out the Sirens crew (you may also recognize Kevin from a guest spot on Brooklyn Nine-Nine last season). Brian still lives with his parents and has been recently involved in a love triangle, which Kevin was able to tell me a little bit about, as well as what we can expect for the rest of the show’s second season.
TVOvermind: Hi Kevin. Thank you for taking time out to talk with me today.
Kevin Bigley: Oh sure! No problem man!
I’m a big fan of yours and a big fan of the show.
Oh cool. That’s great!
The show has developed its characters a lot since Season 1. How would you say that has Brian changed?
I think Brian has become more confident in himself, and in his opinions. I don’t know if you have any friends like this, but I know a couple people like it, they’re like un-checked nerds. You know? I say that very delicately. Like, people who have certain opinions and loves of things that are very nerdy, and don’t feel that they are nerdy. Like they shouldn’t be AS into them as they are, you know? That’s kind of Brian. I think Brian this season is more confident in his opinions about morality, and specifically romantic comedy. I think that’s kind of the monster that they’re dealing with this year.
Yeah, definitely! Brian is involved in a love triangle of sorts. Is there anything you can elaborate on in terms of how that might affect Brian and the show going forward?
Yeah, I think that, you know, more confusion (Laughs). When the ship set sail, the captain didn’t really know where to head anyway, and now he’s even more lost. He’s lost in a storm. He’s being pulled in two directions, one by an asexual woman and the other by a very sexually active nurse. He doesn’t really know what to do. You know, it’s polar opposites. He’s never been desired really before, so that’s kinda something that’s…it’s a confusion cocktail that’s perfectly perfected.
What has been your favorite scene to shoot so far?
Man there’s so many of them. I think that any time I’m in a room with (Josh) Segarra, it’s fantastic. Because he’s so funny, and he’s so giving, too. He gives so many gifts, and improvs with you, and makes eye contact and connects with you, you know? He’s a very passionate improv-er. It’s kind of like he’s improv-ing like he’s making love to you. He makes eye contact, and he gives you a bunch of gifts. I love that guy. Probably the best scene, or the favorite, was the magic show scene we did. Although there was a lot of improv and other lines that just got cut out because of time, and we had to…but we have some more, like in the finale. Something happens, there’s a major storyline with Brian and Billy, in regards to Brian’s living situation. So you get to see Brian’s basement that he lives in, and Billy comes over, and it’s kind of like a sleepover. That was also fantastic. There were so many, so many jokes.
Awesome. What is coming up on Sirens that you’re most excited about?
Probably that episode, the finale. That’s one of our best, I think. It’s just so much fun, you know? And Segarra just kills that scene. There’s so much for him to do. Anytime you give that guy anything to do, it’s gonna be fantastic. So getting to play with him on that stuff was great. I’m really looking forward to that. I’m really looking forward to more of the Voodoo and Brian love stuff. There’s more of that coming. Resolution, non-resolution, all that stuff.
I have to ask, did you get to hold the python?
I did. I did get to hold the python. The fake python. But I got to hold him! Yeah, they did a good job. They would just pull these little…what looked like guitar strings, to make it tighten, and loosen. It was pretty cool.
Just one more question for you. Let’s say that I only have room for one more show in my schedule, and I already watch Sirens so this isn’t really for me, but this is for our readers: why should it be yours?
I think because, with Parks & Rec gone, we’re a really good filler for that. We have something that I think is fantastic, which is quirk and heart, and a nice balance of the two. So, a lot like Parks & Rec, where there’s a lot of quirkiness, with a balance of heart, and genuine characters, and I think it’s a perfect show that you can just kind of, turn on and enjoy. You don’t have to fight to be interested in it.
That’s all I have for you, Brian [Laughs]. Sorry, KEVIN. Thank you so much for taking time out to talk with me today.
No problem, man. Thank you for talking to me.
No problem!
Alright Nick, well, enjoy the rest of the episodes, man. We’ve got some good ones coming up.
Sirens airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on USA Network.
