Back in 2008 a villain fell in love and began his quest for world domination all in the same web series. Doctor Horrible was, somehow, a big hit with fans and became a phenomenon that people would begin to clamber about the moment it was over, requesting a sequel as a follow-up to the first series. Who would have ever thought that a musical in this day and would be so sought after? Well actually it’s not too much of a surprise since music and acting have gone together for a very long time, and the theatrical arts that give rise to such projects as this are highly prized and manage to earn great respect among those that are capable of producing said films and those that simply enjoy watching them. Whether or not Dr. Horrible is going to be coming back with a sequel however is as of yet unknown.
There are a few hints that have been dropped here and there along the way, but so far they’re not as decisive as people would like.
There’s a lot of excitement to do another one.
Both Neil Patrick Harris and Joss Whedon would love to do a sequel since they both enjoyed the first series and found it to be quite appealing to their sense of taste. Plus they would like the chance to see Dr. Horrible’s story move forward and develop even further as he attempts to keep his love alive in whatever way possible. Fans just couldn’t get enough of the series and have been asking over and over when Joss is going to finally make time to do this. For his own part Joss has told many fans that his experience with musicals is very short, as Dr. Horrible was one of only two that he’s ever done. But he is actually excited to do a sequel, though it would take time, possibly a bigger budget, and of course the return of the stars to make it work. Whether he’ll get all those things is kind of up in the air at the moment.
The writer’s strike was when the last one was made.
It’s uncertain whether this would be a sticking point or not since the writer’s aren’t on strike at this time and there are plenty of projects that are being made. That however could mean that there isn’t enough time to get Dr. Horrible 2 up and running simply because Whedon would be too busy to do so. The fans would love to think that Joss has all the free time in the world he needs or could make it but in order to remain in his position and remain successful he kind of needs to keep working on motion pictures and projects that are going to appeal to a mass amount of people. Dr. Horrible managed to attract a large fan base, but for the most part it was for those that enjoyed the niche it fulfilled and were ready to see more after it went off the air. It was successful without a doubt, but not quite as lucrative as other projects.
Neil Patrick Harris isn’t getting any younger.
Like it or not Neil Patrick Harris can’t really pass as a young man any longer and it will only continue to be this way as the years keep going by. His youthful demeanor could easily be gone by the next film and while he still looks pretty good for his age allowing him to act as a young man is going to seem silly at some point. Whether there’s another actor on deck that could fulfill the part is hard to know since Joss isn’t being completely open with his ideas but if that’s not the case then the loss of the star actor could be a huge blow to any chance that this series might have of being made. It’s not enough to say that they could just go out and find someone else, that might take a while too, but once again, casting an older man into the role of a younger one isn’t really going to work for this series no matter if the budget becomes a lot more acceptable.
Fans of this series definitely want to see another one come out but there’s no telling if it’s going to happen or if it’s just a desire that both Whedon and Harris share at this point. It could happen, there’s no saying it absolutely can’t, but it will take some real planning on the part of all parties involved since finding another actor, regaining interest after the switch, and actually getting it done could take some time. Unless there’s another writer’s strike, hopefully it won’t happen, then the amount of time needed to develop a sequel could prove to be too much. Fingers crossed though.
