Dollhouse was a rather terrifying look into what might happen if people were allowed to be mind-wiped and fitted with new personalities so that they would, in a sense, be little more than programmable flesh robots that would do whatever their programming dictated. Unfortunately one of them, Echo, who the series revolves around, continually remembers bits and pieces of the lives she’s lived and continues to grow and evolve as she’s given each new assignment. The show didn’t last all that long for a number of reasons but it’s a shame really since it could have been something unique had it been handled correctly.
It’s hard to know just who messed this one up, the studio or the director.
10. One episode was filmed in extremely dangerous terrain.
During one episode the location in which they were filming had rattlesnakes, massive beehives all over the place, and was known for its rather severe climate. Plus the bumpy roads they had to use to get there didn’t help the stomachs of several of the cast and crew.
9. Joss Whedon was called out for cheating on his wife during the show’s successful run.
Whedon had been known for controversial happenings by this point but apparently his wife had had enough by then and finally called him out on his behavior, which of course just made his life a little harder.
8. Eliza Dushku has her own story of abuse that came out a while back.
The abuse didn’t happen on the set of Dollhouse but instead came about when she was starring in True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. One of the crew members decided to get a little fresh with her and it scarred her a bit emotionally.
7. There was a great deal of misogyny throughout the show.
Whedon is unfortunately known for this type of thing and while he’s been trying to move away from it Dollhouse was rife with these type of undertones.
6. Fox kind of dropped the ball on promoting the show.
The material and the story was there but they had no idea how to promote it and as a result it got dropped into a time slot that didn’t do the show any justice. Promotions were next to nothing and didn’t even come close to the excitement that should have been possible.
5. Whedon had to cram five seasons into two.
The show was too expensive despite the fact that it was well done and had a good plot line to work with, so his plan for five seasons had to be condensed into two.
4. It turned Whedon off to network TV.
There was just too much bickering between Whedon and the studio that was ultimately damaging to the show and didn’t allow his vision to be fully realized. After this he went into movies.
3. Fox did a lot of meddling with the show.
Despite being the ones paying for it and having overall control the studio sometimes needs to sit back and let the directors work instead of poking their noses in so often.
2. The original pilot was never aired.
The studio found too many faults with the show and Whedon had to change it time and again until he got it right the way they liked it.
1. The season one finale was never shown in America.
It was added in for the international release but was never shown in the US.
It’s too bad, this could have been a good show.
