The modern version of Doctor Who has never shied away from LGBTQ characters. However, they’ve never had a starring gay character until now. While Captain Jack and River Song have been featured more than once, Pearl Macking is coming in to play Bill which is a starring role. Bill Potts will have her sexuality revealed in her first scene in Doctor Who‘s 10th season which is returning on April 15th. According to i09
There’s some fudging going by the BBC here with a weirdly specific definition of “companion” status that would some how stop the openly pansexual Jack Harkness–who’s portrayed on the show as being attracted to pretty much anything that moves, regardless of gender–from being the “first” LGBTQ companion on the show, in order to make Bill’s inclusion more prominent.
You’ll hear Pearl Mackie mention it in the video below but “who cares?” At this point can we please get over these announcements? We’re living in the 21st century. Gay people exist! Gay people even exist on television! This is news to people? I’d rather just be watching the show and say “huh, she’s gay” when the moment arrives in the same way I’d say “huh, her hair is now blond.” That’s really the point we’re supposed to be at with all of this stuff.
Beauty and the Beast? Who the hell cares that Gaston’s crony is gay! Man, we really need to move on from this stuff.
