It was bound to happen one day. Disney is going to be cutting off Netflix eventually and creating its own streaming service. If that surprises you at all then it shouldn’t. There are a vast number of Disney movies and programs that would warrant such a service and in truth the corporation has been thinking over this project for a while. From a business standpoint it makes sense considering that Disney won’t be hampered in any way according to any rules and regulations that Netflix has concerning the content that it shows. This new streaming service will be all-Disney all the time without any interruptions or issues to deal with when it comes to availability.
This will be a big blow for Netflix however, as they’ve been fully enjoying the partnership they’ve had with Disney since 2012 when they first signed. Unfortunately the deal that was brokered didn’t really take effect until just last year, so Netflix isn’t even being given the chance to really benefit from the partnership. They’ll be allowed to keep the movies that they already have and those that are acquired up until 2019 when Disney plans to begin their own streaming service, but after that everything that Disney owns will be exclusive to their own network. Netflix will have to release all Disney movies and shows after that happens. That’s going to be a hard hit to take no doubt.
In truth it’s a smart business decision by Disney as it affords them all the rights of their own product and gives the corporation complete autonomy. There’s no other service to pay and no one else to share the profit with should people find this new streaming service to be favorable for their families. It might seem a little cutthroat but it’s not a a personal matter, it’s all business. Disney has become known for taking over and assimilating what it desires to control and taking over Netflix might be too risky and too costly a venture at this point. Creating their own streaming network could be more cost effective and grant them less of an ordeal than simply taking over an existing network. And more than that, by pulling away from Netflix it does allow the network to focus more on what might be seen as adult content and the possible evolution of new deals that could be necessity propel Netflix into a new level of popularity.
This is all theoretical of course as we’ll have to wait and see what will really happen when 2019 rolls around. The idea that an all-Disney network could be far more attractive to families is something that is both enticing and exciting to think about. It is also interesting to think that with this huge hit to its selection that Netflix could think of diversifying and finding new partners to latch onto in order to increase its revenue and scope. Perhaps if the network is lucky it could possibly begin streaming shows and movies that are otherwise inaccessible at this time on the Netflix channel. You never know, it could happen.
