Dexter 5.08 “Take It!” Recap

Dexter 5.08 “Take It!” RecapAs Lumen is leaving her lunch date, she backs up into Liddy’s car. He’s irate, and they exchange information so they can take care of the damage through their insurance companies. Quite a clever way for him to get her information for Quinn. While she’s getting her information, he notices the supplies she’s purchased for Dexter in the backseat of her car, no doubt arising some suspicion in him.

Lumen arrives at the hotel and tells Dexter about her meeting with Owen. Dexter tells her to go if she wants to go. “This is the only part of my life that makes sense anymore,” she tells him. He tells her to stay the night and they prepare the room together. ‘This is all much easier with a partner,’ Dexter thinks to himself. ‘But a partner in what?’ Lumen asks Dexter what he gets out of it, and he says it’s so the men who did this to her won’t do it to anyone else. She astutely points out that he’d be in that room anyway even if he didn’t know her, and that Boyd wasn’t his first and he’d been doing this for a long time. He doesn’t respond, and then they hear Cole in the next room. Moments later, a woman’s screams can be heard coming from the room. Dexter goes into the room and finds Cole having sex to a woman tied down to the bed, who encourages him to tie her other arm. Dexter returns to his own room to find Lumen on the ground, and he holds her head until she falls asleep. She wakes up the next morning to find that she finally slept through a whole night, and Dexter says he will kill Cole later; the woman he was with spent the night so he couldn’t do it.

Deb goes to LaGuerta, angry that she wasn’t told about her suspension. It appears that Batista is backing LaGuerta’s version of the story, which is not completely truthful. The next morning, Deb wakes up and decides she just wants to spend the day in bed. Liddy shows up at Quinn’s to tell him about Lumen. He has learned her name, knew she was supposed to get married three months ago, and arrived in Miami one week before Rita Morgan was married. Then he asks for more money, and Quinn says no. Liddy threatens to tell Deb about the investigation he’s been doing into her brother.

Dexter once again goes to the Chase rally, and just as he’s about to slip out and get ready to use the M99 on Cole, Chase calls him up to the stage. He tells the story about how the Trinity killer killed his wife Rita to the crowd, then asks Dexter to relive that experience of finding her. Lumen, meanwhile, has come out of the room and is watching Dexter tell his story on a television out in the lounge. This is one of the better scenes this season, watching Dexter like this. Cole notices Lumen and chases after her. She’s able to get safely into the room, but he breaks in and starts to choke her. Dexter arrives just in time to get him off Lumen and choke him out. Dexter sets him up on the table and lets him know that he knows about Boyd Fowler. He puts the knife in Cole and looks at Lumen. “You said I’d done this before; that’s true. This is who I am,” he says. Then he tells her about how he saw his mother murdered in front of him and how he’d done this ever since, and how it was the only way he could feel unbroken. ‘Can anyone live with the truth of what I am?’ he asks himself. ‘Is Lumen what will make me whole?’

Deb collects her things from the station and Batista tells her that he’ll do what he has to do to set the record straight because she’s “like flesh and blood” to him.

As Dexter is leaving the hotel with Cole in his suitcase, Chase comes up to him and thanks him for coming up on stage, and tells him not to forget what happened and act on what he learned. He then says “tick, tick, tick, that’s the sound of your life running out.” Then Dexter realizes that his primal instincts were right, and that Jordan Chase is indeed one of the men he’s after.

Owen, sitting alone waiting for Lumen, rips up her ticket and walks off. She has decided to stay in Miami and continue what she started with Dexter. Meanwhile, Dexter and Lumen dump Cole’s body over the side of the Slice of Life into the water. He tells her that he’s sure Chase is one of the men. “We’re going to take down Jordan Chase?” she asks. She helps him dump the bags into the water.

Everything looks like it’s going well for these two. One problem: Liddy photographed the two of them on the boat. How much did he see? What trouble will that lead to? We’ll have to wait until next week to find out.
