Daniel Radcliffe stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night to promote his upcoming film, Swiss Army Man, and the play that he’s currently in rehearsals for, which is titled Privacy. The actor’s new film, which also stars Paul Dano and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, has been dubbed by many as the “farting, corpse movie,” because Radcliffe’s character, Manny, is a corpse that magically starts talking and helps re-introduce Dano’s depressed character to the joy and beauty of life. For Radcliffe, it’s that story, which is the heart and soul of the movie, that makes Swiss Army Man more than just a collection of fart and erection jokes (oh yes, there are erection jokes–Dano’s character uses Manny’s erection as a compass).
“It’s about celebrating our individual weirdness and accepting that, and also celebrating that there are some things, like farting, which is hilarious,” Radcliffe said. “The whole point of the film is that shame, or shame from yourself, is what keeps you from love.”
Of course, while much of Colbert’s interview with Radcliffe was spent talking about both Swiss Army Man and Privacy, the Late Show host also had to ask Radcliffe about the new Harry Potter play that is currently in previews in London, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Radcliffe admitted that he hadn’t see it yet and that he probably won’t see it anytime soon because of the fact that so many die-hard Harry Potter fans will be in the crowd, and for him, that’s not the most enjoyable environment in which to see a play.
“I want to see the show, like I’m genuinely intrigued and I hear it’s fantastic,” Radcliffe said. “I just feel like sitting in an audience for what will, for the most part, in the near future be very enthusiastic Harry Potter fans might be not a relaxing way to see a show.”
