Nathan Fillion has been a busy man this past decade. Not only has been starring in the TV hit Castle but he’s now going to be starring in The Rookie, a police drama coming to ABC. The plot doesn’t sound like too much of a stretch and the upside is that Fillion is worth the effort of making it work. His acting skills have come a long way in the past decade and have managed to land him a few guest star roles on a good number of TV shows, as well as his role on Castle.
The Rookie has to do with a man that, in the prime of his life, decides to move from his small town life to LA, where he pursues his dream of being a member of the LAPD. There’s just one issue with this, most recruits are a usually pretty young, as in coming out of the academy young, college young, not in the middle of their life. As it’s already been described Fillion’s character will be the oldest ‘rookie’ to ever serve in the LAPD, which means that he’ll have the early challenges that are foisted upon all rookie cops and have to deal with the issues that rookies are forced to undergo. It’s interesting to think that anyone would try to do this even in a TV show, but it might make for a decent program.
For one the strange mix between someone that has a great deal of life experience and yet no on the job experience as a police officer could either hurt or help the character. On one hand the character would have no real idea what they’re doing in the field, and would have to learn on the fly even if he did go to the academy. On the other hand that life experience could come in handy when dealing with people and in certain situations that younger officers wouldn’t be able to fully understand just yet. Perhaps it’s this latter part that was being considered first and foremost when the series was still in the idea phase.
It’s kind of hard to judge from his prior performances just how good Fillion will be in this role since he’s played a light, loose character in some instances and then played a hard-nosed, roguish character in other roles. So it’s kind of a toss-up to see what he’s going to be like this time. However, there’s a good chance that he’ll come out as a good-natured guy that’s following his dream and is forced to realize just how behind the other recruits he’s going to be in terms of how easy his basic training is going to be. I can only imagine that there will be a fair amount of levity added into the drama to keep it just light enough, but that the series will for the most part focus upon the character’s development as an officer and the challenges he’ll have to face.
