Do you recall ever playing Sonic the Hedgehog, the original game? The Green Hill Zone is probably the most basic zone in the game, where you start off essentially. It’s not too different from this surf cover that’s played so well and with such measured but dynamic calm. The game obviously didn’t employ this type of music back when it was first created but I could definitely see a reboot of Sonic in the old style using this or something like it as the ending credits. That would just be awesome.
I remember having a lot of fun playing Sonic the Hedgehog when it came out on Sega Genesis. Yeesh, does anyone still remember that game system? Sonic eventually became the poster child for the Sega and eventually they started thinking bigger when they started crafting other characters like Tails to come in and make a go of a new and exciting story arc. The only trouble was that once Tails came in it kind of opened the door for entire cast that was initially great but eventually came to be just too much to deal with.
And it didn’t stop there. At some point it was decided that since Sonic had become such a big thing that he would be able to keep improving upon his fame by adding more and more to the story line and creating something that would become a franchise that led to nowhere. Honesty, Sonic has been kind of ripped apart and redone so many times that the initial joy that people got out of playing the game kind of died out after a while. He’s still a popular character but after the acquisition of Sega by Nintendo he got watered down so much that he made Mario look like a stud again.
Sonic was just fine in his own game on his own system but of course such success is never quite good enough and always runs the risk of being ‘improved’ over and over until it’s finally wrecked. Too many franchises have had their butts handed to them by fans that were seeking something of the same caliber but not on such a grand scale. Many people that loved Sonic the way he was just had to give up when he went to the Sega Dreamcast and then onward to being owned by Nintendo, which was busy gobbling up everything it could to maintain its dominance.
It might have been nicer if Sonic could have made his way to the PlayStation since that gaming system tends to allow its individual games a reasonable sense of autonomy and knows how to bring out the new, desired aspects of a game without saturating it with the characters and plots that have almost nothing to do with the original idea. It’s a nice thought but at this point there seems to be no way that Sonic could ever make his way back to that level of stardom it seems.
Maybe he should just go back to the Green Hill Zone and start over again.
