Nope you, read that correctly, there is an actual consequence for quoting the Top Gun movie at flight school. The Top Gun flight school will charge each staff member $5 for daring to quote from the movie, even though it was pretty awesome. It’s interesting to learn just what went into making one of the most exciting movies that was ever made and what the actors went through, but the fact of having to pay out five bucks at the school each time you dare to mention the movie is kind hilarious. Just imagine a staff member stuck in the 80’s getting hit with a line like “You’re ego is writing checks your body can’t cash!”
That would be classic.
There are a few other things about the film that are kind of interesting as well that have to do with the making of it. For instance, Tom Cruise was given three flights in a Tomcat F-14. He threw up the first time in the air but thankfully his stomach calmed down and the next two flights were fine. Pretty much every cast member that had something to do with flying in the movie was given a ride in an F-14. There were even real pilots in the film situated at key positions so that they could be seen but not focused on. Anthony Edwards was one of the only people that didn’t vomit during his turn in the sky.
Not too long after the success of the first film a second was planned but it never went through. The biggest reason for this was the military’s technology had moved on from that point and they didn’t want a camera anywhere near their new equipment. The less people knew about it the better it would seem. But as of now Tom Cruise has been working on another Top Gun which will be coming out eventually and is hoping to no doubt revive the level of interest in the movie. Many people still remember and love this film but the truth is that as great as it was in its own time the glory has managed to fade and the new and improved action movies have taken over the stage.
Given that Tom Cruise is now older, supposedly wiser, and just as apt to take risks, he will possibly be seen as an instructor or someone else in a position of authority. But can anyone really see Maverick becoming much more than a pilot? Can anyone see him stepping away from flying entirely? It might be an interesting story arc if it did happen, but the chances seem pretty slim that we’ll be seeing Maverick in anything but a flight suit or civilian clothing. I could be wrong though.
Top Gun is one of those movies you idolize as a kid and as teenager. Even into adulthood it still seems pretty cool, but when you get older you realize that rules are put into place for a reason and finally get the idea that breaking them and suffering the consequences isn’t always that positive.
