Chicago Med Review: Healing, New Beginnings, and The Shot Heard By All

Chicago Med

It’s sad to say, but on some shows the writing goes downhill as time passes. I’m so thrilled to say that is not the case with Chicago Med. Season 2 closed with possibly the most intense, emotional, humorous, and beautiful hour of the entire series. Characters found a new peace with each other, several new couples gave into that first spark, we met the face of next season’s trouble, and the pranks on Dr. Stohl were too much fun not to laugh! Turn away now if you don’t want to know the details of how Chicago Med ended its second season with a bang.

Dr. Charles warned Rhodes over and over again that taking Robin out of the psychiatric facility was a mistake. Rhodes had to prove he knew better. He had to prove that Robin’s relationship with her father like his own. He had to prove that he could save Robin from herself the way he couldn’t save his own mother. But Dr. Rhodes is a heart surgeon. He is not a psychiatrist, he has no professional experience with psychiatric disorders, so he had no clue what he was doing when he took Robin away. She had to have a psychotic break for him to understand.

I still stand by that statement, even though Robin did not in fact suffer a psychotic break. Reese pushes Dr. Charles to consider some of Robin’s other symptoms, and what they find is that she actually had a benign tumor in her heart. Her symptoms were a result of her antibodies trying to fight it off. That was a heck of a way for a tumor to make itself known, but thank goodness Latham is able to take it out. Even without his treatments, Latham has become quite adept at reading Rhodes. He has the good sense to send Rhodes far away from Robin’s case. I’m not sure his judgment is spot on when he brings in Dr. Ava Becker from South Africa, whose bedside manner could use some work. Actually, her whole personality could use some work. Rhodes is able to make peace with Dr. Charles, but he’s just found his newest adversary.

Just in time for summer, I’m satisfied with all of the couples on the canvas. Natalie and Will work all day to save a college student who survived the war in Syria only to be hit by a car in Chicago and suffer complications from asthma. Fighting for this kid pushes Will to be honest with himself and with Nina about Natalie. Will and Natalie need to get it together (and we will happily let Patty Murin leave the role of Nina so she can wonderfully play Anna in Disney’s Broadway production of Frozen). Other emerging couples were fun to watch. Noah and Reese look like they have great potential. I never would have guessed that April and Choi would make such a good match, but their chemistry is fantastic!

No sooner had my cup run over with elation at the first 58 minutes of the hour than I felt a great sense of dread. Dr. Charles didn’t make it off the property when one of his disgruntled patients shot him, then turned the gun on himself.

We’ll have to wait till next season to see if Charles survived his grave injury. How would you rate the season finale?
