What’s really funny about Reylo is that some people are actually pushing for it to happen. Oh yeah, some people really want to see Kylo Ren and Rey to hook up somehow despite the fact that they represent very opposite sides of the Force. Of course if Kylo’s admission to Rey about her family was false and they DO happen to be related…yeesh, that’d be awkward to say the least. But since they met it’s been obvious that Kylo and Rey have a definite connection that was formed almost immediately upon Kylo trying to read her mind. When you think about it that’s one of the most invasive ways that a person could ever violate another individual, as it goes well beyond physical rape in some aspects considering that it’s essentially a mental rape from which anyone but those with the strongest of wills would be destroyed by. As it was seen though Rey was able to withstand Kylo quite easily and even push him out of her consciousness, which had to be frustrating but also intriguing as well.
The connection that was seen in The Last Jedi is something that has to go beyond the fact that they’re two powerful Force users, right? So far people haven’t fully accepted the explanation that Kylo gave in TLJ since it doesn’t make as much sense as they wanted, but if it does happen to be true then the Skywalker legacy is truly at an end and there’s no way that Kylo is making it out of episode 9 alive. The theories and ideas that have been flying around throughout the last few weeks and ever since episode 9 was given its title have been a steady stream of conjecture and supposedly professional guesswork from fans and theorists that seem to think they have a good handle on what’s going to happen in the coming movie. Some of what they’re saying might be right, some of it might be insanely wrong, but the one thing that a lot of people are hopefully not pulling for is that Kylo and Rey will find something more than common ground. If that were to happen it seems as though it would defy every expectation that people went in with and will likely make Rise of Skywalker even more controversial than TLJ.
So far this trilogy has been a great big ball of controversy as Christina St.-John from Futurism might agree, as it started out just before the MeToo movement got revved up again and before the stark outrage that people felt when Trump was elected was felt. My reason for putting these events together is pretty simple, as a lot of idealism and imagery in the last two movies seem to have been heavily influenced by the societal landscape that was more than evident several years ago and is still very prominent now. That’s one reason why Rise of Skywalker could be something that builds off of TLJ in a way that might continue to frustrate and even annoy fans that want to see a thrilling tale of adventure, not an idealized view of something that will continue to push certain agendas. If Reylo was to happen during this third movie, and for all intents and purposes it thankfully does not look likely, it seems fair to say that fans might step away from Star Wars altogether until someone could come up with a movie that might not be geared for those that favor a more feminist lean. The funny thing about feminism is that the literal translation has more to do with equality than the application has, and yet it’s been allowed to sway one movie after another until equality is the last thing we get to see.
But enough of that, this idea of Reylo is kind of amusing since people will use any excuse to mock a movie, especially one that even the fans tended to think was garbage. Personally, being a Star Wars fan, there were a lot of things that could have been done differently, but the underlying story wasn’t all that terrible. The remains of the Resistance were in tatters and trying to simply survive, while the First Order was confident that it could finally exterminate them regardless that they’d proven that they could take out their biggest weapons. In truth the Resistance had one major trump card that could be used, if he’d been used correctly. Where the First Order had the technology and numbers, and Kylo Ren, the Resistance had Luke Skywalker, who, as we were all hoping, could negate Kylo with ease since he’s the one that trained him. But instead we got a Luke that had been humbled and hobbled by time and his failure to stop the Jedi from being eradicated again. This connection between Rey and Kylo is almost like a warped sense of distorted puppy love between two teenagers, and honestly if it goes any further it’s going to be cringe-worthy.
