If you watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine, then you’ve probably been looking forward to this week’s episode since you first found out that Charles’ dad was dating Gina’s mom, because no situation says comedy like the marriage of two people whose kids used to sleep together but also kind of can’t stand each other. When complications arose, we saw characters step up to the plate, realizing things about themselves and helping each other to ensure that the wedding went off without a hitch.
Even though the focus of the episode was on the wedding, seeing the show further explore Jake and Amy’s relationship was by far the highlight of the episode. The two are at a point where they both know that the other has, at some point, had feelings for them, but neither is willing to take that next step and admit that maybe they still have those feelings. In a typical comedy, this would lead to extreme awkwardness that is painful to watch. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is able to subvert this expectation, and instead, the two are just as adorable as ever together.
Jake is even able to openly talk to Amy about his feelings for an old high school crush without it becoming awkward, and when Amy inadvertently gets down on one knee while holding a ring, her ‘proposal’ is cute instead of weird. Perhaps it’s because of the chemistry between Melissa Fumero and Andy Samberg, or maybe it’s because their friendship is just so much fun to watch, but this show continues to do what many others have struggled with: having the main pairing on the show be compelling and interesting without making it seem forced.
With the focus on the wedding, we also saw a side of Gina that we so rarely see. She isn’t a character who is likely to talk about her feelings, but often she doesn’t need to. Despite her sarcastic exterior that she puts up to protect herself, she is able to show she cares through her actions. Throughout the episode, we saw her go above and beyond to ensure that her mom had the perfect wedding. Gina really stepped up in this week’s episode and managed to pull everything together in the end, showing how much she loves her mom without having to say it.
The other important revelation in this episode came from Rosa, who has also always had trouble accepting and expressing her feelings. For the first time, she has found herself in a relationship with someone who she cares a lot about and she doesn’t know what to do about that. When Charles’ dad starts getting cold feet about the wedding, afraid that he’s making a mistake by rushing into another marriage, Rosa realizes that by being afraid to give something real a chance, she is being a coward. At the end of the episode, she tells Marcus that she loves him, a huge step for her character that showed just how brave she really is.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine used a wedding episode to explore more than just one romantic relationship on the show. We saw Jake and Amy further come to terms with their relationship, be it romantic or not. Rosa was able to confront some of her commitment issues and let go of the fear of expressing how she felt. Even Captain Holt, who is happily married, was able to learn a few more things about love. For an episode that many fans had been waiting for all season, they managed to meet our expectations with another great episode.
Favorite Moments:
-Apparently if Amy were to ever be a Bond girl, her name would be Maxi Pad.
-”It’s like oatmeal. It sustains you.”- Captain Holt on marriage
-Two of the marriages of Charles’ dad involved “back-to-back catfish situations.”
