While commercials during the Oscars don’t cost nearly as much as the Super Bowl, companies still try to take advantage of the airtime. While viewers were busy trying to figure out how the Academy flubbed the best picture award, there were some decent ads that popped up on our televisions. One of them was for the Sci-Fi movie Bright which is starring Will Smith. The film from director David Ayer and writer Max Landis is about a human cop (Smith) who has to team up with an Orc (Joel Edgerton) to stop bad guys (or things) from obtaining an all-powerful weapon in a world where humans and fantastical creatures live side-by-side. Sound a little familiar? That’s because Alien Nation used to exist!
By the way this is a Netflix movie. Anyone else find this to be odd? It’s not odd that Netflix is making films. It’s odd that Will Smith is now starring in Netflix films. Truth be told it’s been a very long time since Smith killed it at the box office. He was great in Concussion but when it comes to blockbusters his last real success was probably Men in Black 3 and that’s being very generous by calling that a blockbuster movie (which it was not).
Could this be the movie that gets his action movie success back on track? I’m not counting on it. Trailer looks cool but remember, it’s a trailer.
