We’re sitting on the threshold of El Camino’s release to Netflix and people are obviously pumped and simply can’t wait for it as you can imagine that a lot of them have been anticipating this for a while, ever since Jesse managed to escape thanks to Walt in fact. In a way it might seem as though life hasn’t made that much sense following the moment that the show ended and people simply had to accept it since Walt was gone, Jesse was on his own, and everyone we’d cared about up until that moment was living an altered and very different life than they were used to. From the opening of the first episode of the first season of Breaking Bad you had to know that this show was going to be something we would be talking about for a while to come since Bryan Cranston came out in his underwear no less and made a statement of sorts that spoke volumes without actually saying anything. People might not have been hooked at that point but they were certainly curious since they wanted to know more about why an older man was standing outside a smoke-filled RV in his shirt and underwear pointing a gun down the road as sirens were heard in the distance. And now here are the stars of the show reading comments about a movie that is basically the end result of a show that was a blitz to the senses when it first came out.
It goes without saying that El Camino is going to be bombarded by the audience who have been waiting for this so desperately when the first mention of it hit the internet. Brian Tallerico of The New York Times has a list of things for people to remember just in case their memories have slipped a bit. People want to see more of Jesse, they want to know that he got away and was okay, that he didn’t suffer some severe form of PTSD. Of course that last hope is kind of in vain since you can imagine that his head is going to be all kinds of messed up after what he’s been through and the long and torturous run he’s had since meeting up and working with Walt. His life was turned upside down at first and then stuck to a continuously-spinning gyroscope shortly after as things continued to spin completely out of control as his life just managed to get worse and worse as he entered into a series of self-destructive behavior and was then exploited, then messed up again, and then was exploited again. Jesse hasn’t had the easiest time of it since really he was taken for a ride more than once throughout the series. It seems easy to think that he’s going to be one suffering unit to begin with in this movie since all that’s happened at this point isn’t going to just go away even if there’s a span of time between Breaking Bad and El Camino. It would typically take years and a great deal of therapy for Jesse to really get past what he had to do in order to survive while working with Walt, and it would seem that the movie is taking off not too long after Jesse was able to get away. So you know he’s going to be a mess, and in no way ready to just get back to his old life.
In a way it’s kind of fun to watch the stars read these comments since all of them have been pretty thankful for their time on the show and have shown a great deal of appreciation for the people that have helped to make it such a hit. That’s a very big nod to the audience that stands as a big reason as to why Breaking Bad became such a huge hit. People will watch a show simply because they enjoy it. Even if the story is messed with a bit, or someone dies that they don’t want to see go, they’ll keep watching after a while since they’re emotionally invested in the show after a while and can’t just give it up. Breaking Bad gave people a show that was dysfunctional in many ways and also delivered a story that was nothing short of a mixture of desperation and utter depression just waiting to spill over, but people ate it up. Somehow they identified with Jesse and with Walt and came to want more of these two as the show went on. How far people actually went when it came to this show had a lot to do with how the stars treated their audience and the thanks they gave the people rather frequently since they no doubt understood that without the fans that there likely wouldn’t be a show. El Camino wouldn’t even exist if not for the fans, so thanking them is a huge gesture that the stars of the show no doubt undertook with the understanding that it was the smartest and most gracious thing to do.
