Bradly Cooper is looking to play the lead in a new Matt Helm movie. If you don’t know who that is don’t feel too bad since the original onscreen presentation of Matt Helm was turned into a TV series and apparently didn’t really measure up to the many novels that had been written about the famed spy that was considered to be ageless in some regards and extremely brutal. He wasn’t so much a spy in the classic sense of the word, but he was a counter-agent, someone sent to nullify and exterminate enemy agents that he was directed towards. In short he was the tracker/killer that the US government sent out to eliminate any spy that was seen as a threat to the country.
That kind of lead position might suit Cooper to a tee really since he’s been known to play characters that are essentially cold-blooded and have no remorse for the things they do. It’s hard to know a lot about Matt Helm however if you’ve never read the books or watched the original series. But knowing enough about Cooper’s acting is good enough to think that he might be able to excel in this role. As far as being someone that can get in and get out of any place he wants you can think back to his role as Face in the A-Team. Sure the movie didn’t do that well but he played the part just about perfectly and was the kind of jovial individual that could go ice cold in a minute if he had to. Then there was the role he played in The Midnight Meat Train. He started out as pretty weak and afraid of what he was seeing but once the film had ended he was the cold-blooded killer that people knew to fear.
Cooper is a cool character in any regard since he has the look that people want to see and the acting talent that allows him to be a kind of chameleon, meaning that he can adapt to the situation at hand and become the character he needs to be in order to make the role work. This was seen perfectly in Limitless when he made the swift transition from being a hopeless, luckless writer that had no chance of getting published and no chance at life to someone that had all the answers and knew just how to navigate the craziness of life by using the greater portion of his brain and figuring out the answers to questions that hadn’t been asked yet. He can play just about any part he’s asked to do which is why he feels a bit underrated at times. His talent isn’t wasted on anything really, it’s just not utilized as well as it could be all the time.
As a counter-agent though it’s easy to believe that he would be entirely convincing since he’s got the kind of look in his eyes, when he has to, that says he can be completely ruthless when he has to be, and be your best buddy the moment after.
