Black Mirror’ Renewed for Season 5 at Netflix

After the fourth season of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror was launched late last year, the critically acclaimed anthology series from Netflix is reported to be coming right back with a fifth season. The premiere date, along with an episode count has yet to be released.

Netflix used a teaser to confirm the news which pointed to several of Black Mirror’s critically praised episodes, ending with a referenced message to season two and the episode “Be Right Back”, which starred Domhnall Gleeson and Hayley Atwell. In addition, the trailer was posted to social media, playing the show’s famous theme song. Furthermore, the teaser held a huge Easter egg for “Black Museum” from season four’s finale episode and it referenced nearly every single episode of the entire series.

Brooker and Annabel Jones, who is the executive producer, launched Black Mirror in the UK on Channel 4, airing the first two seasons, before bringing the horror anthology series’ third season to Netflix, which was seriously acclaimed. In fact, the episode “San Junipero” which starred Gugu- Mbatha Raw and Mackenzie Davis brought Brooker and Black Mirror two Emmys.

Black Mirror was decided to launch its third and fourth season as two six-episode parts. Jones, the executive producer says that it puts them on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but that meant it was working. She also said that if the dark anthology series had tried seven instead, that she thought their brains would pop.

Brooker and Jones had been taking their time in order to create both the third and fourth seasons, as the dark series is becoming more and more vast in its ambitious scope. The two aim to bring in new genres and themes, keeping things as unpredictable as they’ve been so far. The third season actually had the show’s first happily ever after with the “San Junipero” episode, with “Hated by the Nation” being the longest episode so far. The fourth season also had some firsts, such as it’s first space epic with the episode “USS Callister” and it also has the show’s shortest episode, “Metalhead”, which was also the only black and white episode of the series. Additionally, Jodie Foster became the first female director of the series with “Arkangel.”

Brooker says that even though it’s tempting, that they don’t want to hit the same bell again. Instead, he says they have to keep the show as unpredictable as it’s been so far. The seasons’ past timelines offer us clues as to when we can expect the pair to once again bring Black Mirror into our homes, bringing with it formerly uncharted territory. The show will continue exploring paranoia surgically attached to technology with both digital and human consciousness intertwined. Since the third season came out in October 2016 and the fourth in December 2017, we can probably expect the fifth to be here around the end of this year or the beginning of the next at the latest.

Black Mirror’s future is looking positively bright, even if the show’s character’s futures aren’t so bright. Jones says she remains optimistic of it’s future, saying they love making the show and consider it a privilege to be able to make such an unusual and dark anthology mix. She says it’s the stuff dreams are made of…or maybe it’s nightmares; depends on which side of the screen you end up on.
