Jim Caviezel is someone that you look at and might look away from in the next instant since he doesn’t always seem like leading material. But the truth is that he’s a surprise when it comes to how talented he really is and what he can do on screen since in several movies he’s shown the kind of skill that can easily elevate a person from being considered to be just okay to someone you actively like or hate when it comes to their role. He’s played the good guy, the bad guy, and a few parts in between, and he’s nailed every last role he’s been given in a way that shows that some still believe he’s a better supporting actor than a lead, while others think he has the potential to captain a cast despite the fact that bigger, more well-established stars can still top him without much effort. That he doesn’t try to upstage anyone is a testament to his acting skills since he knows where he fits into a movie and keeps his spot and his poise through everything.
Here are five of his best movies.
5. Diggstown
You don’t get to see too much of Jim in this movie but he’s there just enough to be noticed since he is one of the boxers that goes up against Roy Palmer when the big match gets underway. During the match between Palmer and Jim’s character he’s given an out by the referee that’s seconded by Palmer, but of course with movie being the way it is Jim’s character decides to call Roy a rather nasty word right after telling him to F off. Roy’s response is priceless since he not only drops Jim with a serious gut check but goes so far as to spank him as he’s lying there trying to keep from puking all over the canvas.
4. Pay It Forward
When you get an idea that makes sense to you but no one else it takes some time to really take hold. However, when the idea of paying it forward is allowed to take the homeless man that Jim plays and give him a glimpse of what life can be like if he just tries to better himself and then show kindness to others it begins to gain traction and eventually becomes something that people gladly embrace. While the movie does end with a tragedy as the kid that comes up with the idea ends up dying, the message that this kid started grows in a way that gives hope that humanity hasn’t lost its way just yet.
3. Escape Plan
When your primary job is to show how fallible a prison’s security is there’s no doubt that you’re going to make a few enemies along the way. Sylvester Stallone’s character is given an opportunity to try and escape a prison that seemingly has no possible way out, but the trick is that Warden Hobbs is the kind of guy that is bound and determined to make a prisoner’s stay as miserable as possible, and when one is stuck in a prison that is unknown to most of the modern world, it’s hard to imagine being able to escape with anything less than an army at your back. Yet for all that Stallone does escape, but in one of the most daring and unbelievable ways.
2. The Count of Monte Cristo
The story of Edmond Dantes is a classic since it’s one of treachery, deceit, and revenge on a scale so epic that many people might feel that his final act of justice wasn’t even close to being enough. This movie wasn’t exactly loved by a lot of people but then again it was well done in many respects since it did bring a new feel to the tale and it did manage to include some very well-known actors that brought it to life once again in a very compelling way. From his training to his time as a count he serves as a great reminder of just how pleasing it is to see justice done in a movie now and again, plus, the final fight was rather entertaining.
1. Passion of the Christ
Few if any viewers made it through this movie without flinching. It garnered a great deal of criticism as well as praise when it was released as it was the type of movie that went forward without apology and depicted a tale that is hard for many to watch. Mel Gibson’s vision was such that he wanted to show the story of Jesus Christ without anything other than what many believe to be the truth of a religion that to this day has been one of the most noted and most powerful in the world. The story of Jesus is one that many people still cling to largely because it is the one that many believe has shown the most truth.
It’d be great to see him in more leading roles when it comes to big, more notable movies.
