Hot Fuzz was one of those action movies that you couldn’t quite believe was being made but at the same time were excited to see since it starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and those two have been off the chain since they appeared in Shaun of the Dead. The store revolves around big-city cop Nicholas Angel being sent out into the country after being promoted. His desire to stay in the city was thwarted by none other than the chief inspector and early on in the movie he finds out that his excellent track record and ability to do his job with such a high degree of success has fostered a bit of resentment in his office and this is why he’s being transferred. Imagine it, you do such a good job that the others you work with become jealous and then ship you off since they can’t keep up. To be fair Angel is a bit of a perfectionist and doesn’t really work well with others when it comes to getting the job done. He’s the kind of take-charge guy that is strictly by the book and doesn’t compromise, at least not until later on in the movie.
A sequel though seems like it would be interesting just thinking about it.
The plot would have to be the reverse of the first film.
Since the first movie showed Angel going to the country, a decision he was none too happy about, the second movie would almost have to show Angel taking Danny back to the city to serve as an officer. Perhaps those that placed him in the country would call him back again and he could request that Danny be trained as an officer in the precinct. One thing is for certain, Danny would be just as out of his element as Angel was in the first movie. This could lead to an interesting story since the idea of Danny going to the big city would be just as disorienting, if not more so, than Angel going to the country. There’s a lot more that can happen, possibly more antagonists to discover, and less of a laid-back atmosphere that would allow the police to become so lackadaisical in their manner. Of course that’s what it would seem like, but given that Angel is still very much a top cop and a perfectionist it could be that he and Danny might start cleaning house when it comes to those that want to excel and those that are just getting by. It could even mean taking on the top brass and meting out a bit of justice for Angel.
There are rumors of this happening but nothing has been set in stone yet.
Pegg and a couple of others are interested in creating this movie as it seems like the most possible sequel to make out of the several movies he’s made. But at this point it’s just an idea and nothing has been set up so as to begin production. They would have to bring back several characters at least and there might even be some merit in the idea of bringing back Timothy Dalton since his character didn’t die at the end of the film. Also, given that Angel didn’t make a whole lot of friends in the city, as is evidenced by everyone’s desire to get rid of him, it could be that he’ll have a whole department against him upon returning to the city. You can imagine however that since he’s been up against an entire town he might actually enjoy the challenge this time around. Plus since he’s the best cop on the force there seems to be less and less that he’d worry about when it came to those he trained with.
This has certainly been the decade of sequels, reboots, and remakes and in some ways it’s been refreshing but in others it’s been kind of frustrating since the idea of sequels being made means that the studios are often chasing the almighty dollar and nothing else. With some sequels it’s enough to expect one either because the overall story has been broken up into different parts that demand one sequel after another, or the story is so great that people will expect a sequel even if one isn’t hinted at. Hot Fuzz had a pretty well-defined ending and beginning so thinking of a sequel doesn’t instill a great deal of hope but perhaps there’s just enough story there that it can be pushed and made into something feasible. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are after all two very skilled actors that work great together and have shown that they can create something pretty special. The only drawback to this movie it seems is that it would be about the same thing just in reverse, meaning instead of going from the city to the country one would be going from the country to the city.
That seems like a backward slide in some regards.
