The new show Making It will be, in effect, much like Project Runway or Chopped in that the contestants will be challenged to make something within a set time limit and be given different instructions per round. Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman will be teaming up to bring this show to NBC sometime soon hopefully, though no release date has been given as of yet.
This could be something quite interesting to tell the truth since unlike food and softer materials this could actually prove to be a difficult task. Don’t get me wrong, working with delicate fabrics and foods, and even with latex and specially crafted costume pieces like you can see on Face/Off are incredibly hard to fashion. But depending upon the craft being made it could require more time for the materials to settle or glue to set or something, anything, that goes into even the smallest construction. I would think that the producers would take this into account and keep the challenges hard enough to make the contestants think but not so hard that they lie outside the realm of reason.
Simon Doonan and Dayna Isom Johnson will be acting as judges on the show while Poehler and Offerman will take the same role that Alton Brown takes on Iron Chef, commentating and taking a peek at what the competitors are making. You can almost expect them to crack a joke or two or three now and then since let’s face it, they’re two very funny people. But for the most part they’ll be staying out of the way and doing what they can to understand what’s going on and how the contestants are going to accomplish their projects.
You’ve watched Chopped or Project Runway, yeah? The amount of time that the contestants on these shows are given doesn’t seem like nearly enough when you factor in the kind of crafts that the people on Making It will be assigned. Anything that doesn’t involve putting fabric together in various ways or cooking just seems like it’s bound to take some time no matter what. It will be interesting to see what they come up with and what kind of challenges will be given to them by the producers.
These types of shows tend to pull in a lot of viewers for the reason that while they are reality shows they aren’t trying to be as fake as possible. It might be stretching the bounds of reason to think that some of the shows are actually filmed in the time allotted but there is something very impressive about those that can take any type of project and make something great in a short amount of time. I just happen to wonder if the projects these folks will be taking on will be incredibly difficult or they’ll be somewhat easy and counted more on detail than speed. Most shows like this push their contestants as hard as they can go in that short period of time that they’re given.
If food shows can be entertaining then it’s going to be fun to see what comes out of this show.
