Alibaba CEO Jack Ma Stars in a Martial Arts Short Film

Jack Ma is the wealthiest man in Asia with a net worth of more than $47 billion. The e-commerce billionaire is number 18 on the list of the wealthiest men in the globe. In addition to being an ingenious businessman, it seems like he is a jack of all trades with multiple talents to his hat. Reports indicate that the rich man will be making his movie debut. He will be showing off his martial arts skills to the world in a film with the title Gong Shou Dao which in English means “The Art of Attack and Defense.” Alibaba Group which is part of Mr. Ma’s firm is responsible for producing the Kung Fu Comedy. There is no word on the total amount spent to make the film.

It is a short movie that only runs for about twenty minutes. It will also be released in various cinemas across major cities in China. The rest of the world will have the opportunity to stream it online at no cost. Asia One reports that Ma 53 who been practicing Tai Chi for more than 30 years will be taking on Jet Li a famous star. After becoming an overall champ, Jack goes on to exhibit his Tai Chi Routine for five minutes. Currently, it is said that the self-made billionaire is a disciple of Master Wang Xi’an who is a Chinese Tai Chi expert.

The plot of the movie follows Master Ma (role of Jack Ma) who is a huge fan of Kung Fu. He always imagines that he could beat the best fighters in the field. He trains hard and ends up defeating all his opponents in one-on-one fights. On a Facebook post, Jet Li wrote that the movie was a tale of his good friend Jack who would be acting as a Taiji Master. He added that he was not only a character in the short film, but Li was an executive producer as well. He said that the movie portrays that Kung Fu is not all about attacking, but it also utilizes defense to accomplish attacking purpose.

It is a star-studded show because Jack Ma is also in competition with:

  • Tony Jaa
  • Sammo Hung Kam-bo

Rumors reveal that all the actors did not receive payment for the movie because they became part of the project to salute the culture of Chinese Kung Fu. Ma reportedly spent at least 12 hours every day for twelve days to complete shooting the production according to China Daily. It also stated that the wealthy gentleman only left the set one time and it was to meet with Enrique Pena Nieto the Mexican President.

Despite its shortness, the film also features choreography from three iconic martial arts film choreographers i.e.

  • Yuen Wooping (The Matrix, Kill Bill)
  • Ching Siu-Tung (Swordsman)
  • Sammo Hung (Ip Man movies)

In the action film, Ma ends up as a Kung Fu superstar after he beats all the martial arts masters. This includes the world-renown Jet Li. It, not a film that is too serious as it also has incorporations of humor. The tycoon said that he was making the movie in a bid to spread the strength and philosophy of Kung Fu saying that the culture was not only a Chinese thing but a global one as well.

Reactions from people who have already watched the film are diverse. Some love his acting skills. Others, however, say that it is only a publicity move.
