This week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continued the emotional roller coaster with the return of Marvel fan favorite from the Thor franchise, Lady Sif (played by the remarkable Jaimie Alexander) as the show continues with the introductions of the Inhumans.
Every time I see Lady Sif in anything, whether it’s on this show or in the films, I just want to see more of her. Even though it will never happen, a part of me would prefer to have Sif part of this show as a recurring character because sometimes I don’t think the films can give her that type of focus. I was glad that Vin-Tak wasn’t really a bad guy in this episode, just a minor obstacle. He was also a great way to tell the story of how the Krees created the Inhumans (even though no one has yet to used that term for these people in the MCU, dang it!) and from what I know, it seems that the MCU is keeping very closely with the comics version.
Skye’s journey in this week’s episode was utterly heartbreaking and really shows how far we’ve seen her come, as she’s transformed from the geeky hacker we meet in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot to this tortured, but strong woman. It’s fascinating to see the origin of Skye/Daisy Johnson in this version because I’m not sure how much has been revealed about Daisy in the comics and seeing her as an Inhuman adds some bonus to it. The best part of this episode was the fact that they didn’t keep the secret about Skye being an Inhuman from the rest of the team for too long. Secrets can, a lot of the times, actually hurt a show itself when we have to see the characters constantly lie to each other.
Speaking of secrets, while I’m not saying that what Mack did to Hunter at the end was 100% right, I will admit that it was nice to get someone to shut him up. I’m not sure what my problem is with Hunter, if it’s the acting or the writing itself, but I just struggle with liking this character.
But anyway, let’s discuss this big mystery that Bobbi and Mack are keeping a secret. It’s safe to say that they are by no means cooking up something evil because 1) Mockingbird would never be brought into the MCU as a character on the enemy’s side and 2) Mack just doesn’t seem like a villain in disguise.
I still hold out hope for them creating the West Coast Avengers, because with the lineup that we are getting in Phase 3, another Avengers team wouldn’t hurt, and if it were to come from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., that would re-strengthen the connectivity between the Marvel films and the TV series. Bobbi and Mack talk about something they are “creating,” so is this project of theirs still at early stages by any means? I’m guessing at this point that within the next three episodes from now, we will know what they are up to and hopefully, it will be something Marvel related.
Overall, a very solid episode, but it could have toned down a little bit on Sif’s amnesia, because there were times when it felt like they were just making her look stupid about the simplest things. The tension between members of the team is growing, especially as Skye overheard Mack and the rest of them expressing their fear about her, so this will probably rock all the relationships on the team for the time being.
