Review – LOST Season 5 DVD – TVOvermind

Season 5 of LOST was a total mind trip. I’d like to say that LOST has always been a work of absolute perfection, but we can all admit that the show lost its way (no pun intended) in Season 3. Then came Season 4, which went a long way in redeeming the series. The freighter folk found the island, while the Oceanic 6 managed to escape. The season finale delivered one of the biggest shocks: John Locke was dead.
Fast forward to the Season 5 premiere and we’re immediately introduced to the Dharma Initiative, while back on the mainland, the Oceanic 6 are trying to return to the island. And then, the time travel – cue the mind trip. Time travel has always fascinated me to the point of confusion and LOST was no exception. But surely I wasn’t the only person debating it with my co-workers the day after each episode aired. Was it really not possible, as Faraday insisted, to change the future? How could the Losties travel to the past and influence the future if their travel to the past was dependent on their own past, present and future? Isn’t all time travel just a big circular trip? See? Confusing.
LOST has always – frustratingly – been about questions. So many questions. What’s the source of the numbers? How does the island heal people? Why does it travel through time? What’s up with that smoke monster? In some ways, Season 5 answered many questions. If you wanted to know the backstory of the Dharma Initiative or Danielle Rousseau, then look no further. But, in many other respects, it just brought up more questions. Who, or what, is Jacob? What’s up with the Man in Black? Is John Locke truly dead? Is the island just a game board between Jacob and his mysterious rival – are the characters just chess pieces? See? Questions.
This weekend I sat down and re-watched every single episode on the Season 5 DVD. Because you cannot watch LOST episodes just once. There’s too many hints and clues and information revealed.
ABC and Walt Disney Home Entertainment are releasing the LOST Season 5 DVD and Blu-Ray sets on December 8th:
LOST: The Complete Fifth Season comes to Blu-ray Hi-def and DVD on December 8, 2009 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. All 17 episodes of the season fans and critics alike are calling the best ever are available to watch again and again in a five-disc set packed with never-before-seen bonus material, including revealing cast interviews and behind-the-scenes features, including exclusive content only available on the Blu-ray. The mystery, action and intrigue that have made LOST one of the most influential shows of the decade gather speed as the show nears its highly anticipated final season. The ultimate addition to every TV lover’s collection, LOST: The Complete Fifth Season is perfectly timed for holiday gift giving.
What you really want to ask me about are the Bonus Features, right? I mean, we all care about the episodes, but we also want to know if we’re getting the bang for our buck.
The Bonus Features are fairly decent on the DVD box set. Four featurettes are included, including a tour of the set and behind the scenes rehearsal with Nestor Carbonell (where he reveals that the make-up artists use concealer to try and diminish his ridiculously prominent eye lashes – I’m thinking they’re not using strong enough concealer), interviews with the cast and crew about the time travel storyline and behind the scenes of various episodes. Then there’s the usual fare of bloopers and deleted scenes. The featurettes are pretty interesting and substantial (they’re all over 10 minutes long and one of them is nearly 40 minutes).
If you want a review of the Bonus Features of the Blu-Ray set, then check out our Blu-Ray review.
True LOST fans are going to purchase this box set no matter what the Bonus Features are like, because once the series ends in 2010, we’re all going to go back and rewatch every episode twice to try and catch all of the clues we may have previously missed. Lindelof and Cuse claim they have peppered earlier seasons with clues about time travel and the overall mythology (ie. the Adam and Eve skeletons in the cave in Season 1 supposedly relates to the time travel storyline) and we all want to figure out whether they’re telling the truth.
Until you can get the box set in your hands, check out the preview videos we previously posted of the Bonus Features from the DVD set and LOST University.
LOST Season 6 premieres on February 2, 2010.
