There’s that word again. Domestic. What does it even mean? It confuses some, so let us clear that up for you. It means domestic – local. Not local as in your small town, your little state, or your little area of the country. It means local, as in the entire United States of America and Canada (not adjusted for inflation). Let’s get back to the point at hand. Domestically speaking, Top Gun: Maverick wins. It was not first place, but it broke into the top five movies in domestic box office sales, which is a considerable feat. Only four other movies sit atop the list of movies that made the most money in American movie theaters – and Top Gun 2 box office numbers don’t lie. So how much did Top Gun 2 box office earnings amount to? And what about the other four movies that are at the top?
Number Five: Top Gun 2 Box Office Numbers $705,908,229…so Far
We say so far because Top Gun 2 box office sales are still coming in because the movie is still being shown in many theaters. Released on May 27, 2022, this movie did well on its opening weekend. It was a bold move opening on Memorial Day weekend when so many people choose to travel and spend time at the beach to kick off the beginning of the summer season unofficially. However, it did well, raking in $21 million the first weekend. Since then, however, it’s killing it at the box office. It’s brought in more viewers every weekend than it did on opening weekend. It’s been huge business, and Tom Cruise and Miles Teller live up to those numbers.
Number Four: Avatar $749,766,139
James Cameron made a weekend choice by releasing this one on December 18, 2009. One week before Christmas is a bold choice when considering what people have going on. Lots of shopping to finish. Parties to attend. School events, Christmas events, work events, and everything in between. It was a bold move, but the movie did quite well on its opening weekend. The film earned more than $77 million on opening weekend alone. It became the first film to cross the $1 billion earnings mark in 19 days.
Number Three: Spider-Man: No Way Home $804,793,477
This one takes the win for being the highest-grossing movie in the Spider-Man franchise, and no one is mad about it. No one knew how this would go being released in 2021. The movie came out on December 17, 2021, which was a gamble. The week before Christmas. The Christmas following COVID year when so many cities and states were still keeping this closed down and limited, and not open to just anyone. It was a lot going on, and it was a gamble that paid off for this movie with its $200 million budget.
Number Two: Avengers: Endgame $858,373,000
Avatar might have been the first film to earn $1 billion in 19 days, but Avengers: Endgame put that record to absolute shame. The movie earned more than $1 billion internationally in five days. It hit the $1.5 billion mark in 8 days total. It was a huge success. The film was released on April 26, 2019, which is not a holiday weekend. So many other films this week were released on a holiday weekend, which seems to make a difference. This film broke records left and right in 2019, and it’s a good thing, too, because it was one of the year’s best films.
Number One: Star Wars: The Force Awakens $936,662,225
Released a week before Christmas in 2015, this was a film people were waiting on. The fact that it was a week before Christmas and people had parties and events to attend didn’t seem to bother a soul. They had tickets so far in advance that they were camped out if that was possible in a virtual ticket-purchasing manner. The people who love Star Wars love Star Wars. At the time of its release, it was the first film to surpass Avatar’s record-breaking road to $1 billion internationally. Avatar remained the only film to earn $1 billion in 19 days or less, but this movie ended Avatar’s reign. It took only 12 days for this movie to earn its first billion internationally. It reached its second billion earnings 53 days after being released into theaters. It is not a wrong way to introduce a movie into the world.
