It’s an understatement to say that Stranger Things is a hit for Netflix.
The sci-fi horror series was introduced to audiences in 2016 when the disappearance of a young boy in Hawkins, Indiana, sparked the otherworldly powers of a young girl (Eleven). The Netflix exclusive ran for three seasons before going on a hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic. Three years later, the first seven episodes of season four dropped, and the company revealed that a new record was set for an English-language series. Episodes of season four were viewed for 287 million hours. Fans had been clamoring for the latest chapter involving Eleven and the gang as the viewership beat the debut of Bridgerton season two, which previously held the record of 193 million hours. However, in July, according to Forbes, Stranger Things shattered records again, garnering 7.2 billion minutes of streaming viewership in the U.S. from May to June 5. This includes repeated watches of the previous season. Nielson stated that it was the highest one-week total since the company began tracking data and statics.
Stranger Things is a massive hit, so it makes sense that Netflix wants to expand on intellectual property. On September 29, 2021, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos spoke at the Code Conference in Beverly. They stated that there were some discussions about possibly giving Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), her own series. However, the Duffer brothers have put a rest to those rumors about a potential Eleven spinoff as Matt and Ross confirmed that the Stranger Things universe will expand on the Happy Sad Confused podcast; however, the duo made it clear that Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven or Joe Keery’s Steve will not be the focus on that series (Transcript courtesy of Indiewire.com):
“I’ve read these rumors that there’s going be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s going to be a Steve and Dustin spinoff or that it’s another number,” the Duffer Brothers said. “That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent, I don’t know, how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”
Though the Duffer brothers have confirmed a future spinoff, it’s nowhere near close to production as Netflix doesn’t even know the concept yet, “Hopefully, we find that right person to pass the baton to while we go on to do new stuff.” The Duffer brothers may have shot down any possibility of a series focused on Eleven, but that doesn’t mean that the spinoff wouldn’t feature her or any of the other core cast members in some capacity. Further along in the podcast, the brothers discussed the final season, highlighting that the run times will be notably shorter than season four and that the duo is resisting the urge to introduce more characters into the series’ final stretch. The fifth season is being written with a recently uploaded image on Twitter showcasing the first day of the writer’s room. There’s no confirmed date for the final season, though many speculate it will be in late 2023.
As for Millie Bobby Brown, even with the news that she won’t get her own spinoff, the actress’s schedule will remain busy as Brown is returning to the Enola Holmes sequel, reprising her role as the title character, “I can’t wait to collaborate again with my ‘Enola Holmes’ family.” she told Variety. “Enola holds a special place in my heart – she’s strong, fearless, intelligent, and brave. I look forward to fans seeing how her journey continues!”
The Netflix exclusive will also star Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes, Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury, Susan Wokoma as Edith, Adeel Akhtar as Lestrade, and Helena Bonham-Carter as Enola’s mother, Eudora. Netflix confirmed that the sequel would be released on Friday, November 4. The official synopsis is below:
“Fresh off the triumph of solving her first case, Enola Holmes (Brown) follows in the footsteps of her famous brother, Sherlock, and opens her own agency – only to find that life as a female detective-for-hire isn’t as easy as it seems. Resigned to accept the cold realities of adulthood, she is about to close shop when a penniless matchstick girl offers Enola her official job: to find her missing sister.
But this case proves to be far more puzzling than expected, as Enola is thrown into a dangerous new world – from London’s sinister factories and colorful music halls to the highest echelons of society and 221B Baker Street itself. As the sparks of a deadly conspiracy ignite, Enola must call upon the help of friends – and Sherlock himself – to unravel her mystery. The game, it seems, has found its feet again!”
The upcoming film will be helmed by Harry Bradbeer, based on the book series by Nancy Springer, The Enola Holmes Mysteries. The story is by Bradbeer and Jack Throne.
