Adam Thorn is best known by most as the guy who recently let a python bite him for the sake of recording it on a new and a bit controversial television series titled “Kings of Pain.” The show is extremely popular but it’s not for the faint of heart or those who already have a snake or spider phobia. You can safely assume that Adam Thorn is himself one of the “Kings of Pain,” because he’s out to show the world that he can take a good mauling and live to tell about it. Thorn is an interesting figure and since he’s new to reality television, here are 10 things you didn’t know about him to give you a little background into his career and personal life.
1. He’s from Australia
Adam is a native of Australia. This is where he was born and raised. If you are familiar with the geography and wildlife in Australia then you know that there are plenty of species who could inflict high levels of pain in the rugged and unforgiving Outback. There are also many threats because Australia is a country that is loaded with numerous insects, reptiles and animals that can be deadly for humans. Adam is the guy that taunts some of them into biting him.
2. He has an obsession with animals
Thorn is a fan of animals and he has been so since he was only four years old. He has included working with animals as a daily part of his life. Adam finds them to be fascinating creatures and his interest in them is well-intentioned. He has found a way to make a living out of being around animals all day long.
3. His role in the television series is not just for thrill seeking
Adam Thorn has been chased up trees by elephants and he has also been the prey of Asiatic lions. He has had multiple brushes with death in his work with animals. He was also nearly strangled by a reticulated python. His work puts him at risk for severe injury and death, but he is a resilient kind of guy who can take a nasty bit or painful sting by an insect. He is on a scientific mission to create a pain index that extends beyond evidence that was previously known by gathering it on his own. He is in the process of making a contribution to science with the data that he is collecting through his experiences with pain.
4. He is an expert snake handler
Adam Thorn knows what he is doing when he works with snakes of all kinds. He has been formally trained in the discipline of snake handling. He is also a venom expert. He has a keen knowledge of which snakes are venomous and what the effects of the bites will be from these snakes. He also knows how to capture and handle them. He is not only a certified snake handler, but he is also a teacher.
5. Thorn is a professional scientist
Adam’s love for animals led him to become a wildlife biologist and this is what he does for a living when he’s not working on his data collection for the infamous pain index. His day job is as a field zoologist. He’s made some significant contributions to the well-being of his furry friends. Thorne has spent a lot of time studying animals in their natural habitat. He has also been involved in campaigns that involve trapping animals and then relocating them to suitable locations ahead of commercial developers who would otherwise have displaced the animals. He has a big heart with their best interests in mind.
6. The show is hard to watch
Adam Thorn and his partner Alleva put themselves in harm’s way. They track down animals in their natural habitat and capture them. Viewers watch this process while the two set things up and then provoke the animal to bite one of them. It’s difficult to watch the graphic nature of the show because it shows the details of the bites, along with the victim’s reactions to the pain, and yes, there is blood involved. You have to possess a strong constitution yourself. This show is definitely not for the squeamish or the faint of heart.
7. Adam acknowledges that what they’re doing is dangerous
Thorn and Alleva are on the show to document a series of animal bites and insect stings in graphic detail. He acknowledges that he and Rob Alleva are putting their lives in danger. All of this is to prove which animals can inflict the most amount of pain on a human being. In one instance, he was actually hoping for the outcome of large puncture wounds in his arm as a result of the experience with a reticulated python from Indonesia. He further warned that this animal is capable of inflicting massive damage to the human body. He donned a facemask and helmet for the occasion and then let the 16-foot snake bite him on the arm and the result was a bloody mess, but at least it didn’t kill him.
8. “Kings of Pain” is his second televised series
Prior to “Kings of Pain,” Adam Thorn served as a presenter on his wildlife series titled “Adam Thorn Presents.” In the series, Thorn finds animals that are either rare, dangerous or bizarre to showcase.
