With so many people calling for diversity in programming it would seem that Fauda is just one show that has met that demand upon coming to Netflix. Throughout the last several years it’s been seeing that the streaming giant has picked up one property after another in an attempt to diversify and to give out the best content it can find while maintaining high standards and simply trying to entertain the people. Fauda is one of those that might not be picked up right away by everyone as it might seem like the same kind of story in a different location with a different kind of people amid a different culture, but this is in essence why it would be dubbed as ‘must see TV’. If nothing else it’s a new look into something those of us in America might see from our own perspective but not from the same view as those living in other parts of the world might.
The word Fauda translates out to Chaos, which is what this show offers up in a big way it would seem since Doron is a retired Israeli Defense Force operative that wants to live a nice and peaceful life now that his service is ended. But of course that can’t happen since an enemy from his past resurfaces as though to make certain that he’s pulled back into action and, sure enough, he’s back at it. When Doron and his team try to go undercover to get to the bad guy however their cover is blown and the hunt is on as the IDF have to take drastic measures to take the enemy down. In terms of action this show seems as though it’s got more than enough to cover the needs of just about anyone that wants to tune in, but getting used to it might be kind of difficult for some since let’s be honest, American action stars are, to many US citizens, a lot easier to recognize and sympathize with when it comes to watching a TV show or movie. But going into this show with an open mind should avail a viewer quite a bit since it could allow them to fully enjoy the experience and therefore get into the show in a way that is expected. Plus, for a lot of us it would be a different perspective that might prove interesting since a lot of the Israeli influence we’ve seen on American TV has begun to vary throughout the last several years, but up until then it’s usually been confined to a few different roles that haven’t always been flattering. Yasmine Serhan of The Atlantic has a bit more to say on this subject.
Personally one of the only stars that I’ve sympathized with that played an Israeli operative was Ziva David, played by Chilean-American actress Cote de Pablo. You have to admit that she did a fair job of playing the part of a hard as nails Mossad agent that had a lot of trouble acclimating to US culture and customs throughout her time on NCIS. There have been several Israeli actors that have entered the mainstream however, lest we forget Gal Gadot, Natalie Portman, Oded Fehr, Brian George, and many others that have come up throughout the years. To see an Israeli-driven action flick or show that’s not driven around a great deal of ridiculousness such as You Don’t Mess With the Zohan is something that is definitely worth a look since it’s no doubt going to abolish a good number of myths and misconceptions that some people might have about Israeli’s and their customs, and it could just be a great show overall. Too many people in America are still ignorant of the caliber of actors that come from that part of the world and might think that they know what the show is all about due to where it’s located. In truth it’d be interesting to see just what the show is all about since it would indicate a genuine interest in learning something while being entertained.
That being said the plot does seem familiar as it’s been used more than once throughout the years and many upon many shows that have come across the screen, but one thing that people have to remember from time to time is that despite the familiar formula, everyone is going to have their own way of doing things. The formula might be familiar and it might have been done in countless movies and TV shows, but not by this crew and likely not in their own unique way. With that said it’s easy to think that it might be best to just sit down and try to enjoy the show without having any preconceptions about it. Kick back and enjoy a good action program for a while, as that’s the whole point of it after all.
