So one thing is for certain when it comes to the next Peter Rabbit movie, we’re going to laugh now and again even if we don’t find it all that funny. There are just moments when you need to laugh in order to acknowledge that there is something off about talking animals no matter that they can be kind of amusing now and again and, if done right, can actually be hilarious. One thing that David Trumbore from Collider might agree with is that it’s bound to be more family-oriented this time around since it would seem that Peter is going to have make adjustments to his life and way of thinking at this point since it’s kind of obvious that things aren’t going to remain the same. That being said it’s a hope that this movie will be something a little better than the first since despite not being a total and utter flop the first movie wasn’t as well-received as it could have been no matter who wants to argue about it.
The whole idea should be cute, comfortable, and without a doubt something the entire family could love, but somehow it turns into something that becomes one gag and one lame joke after another while the attempt to create a solid and cohesive movie is never really attempted apart from when it becomes convenient to do so. In a sense Peter Rabbit is kind of a self-serving movie in that it goes in to make the creators happy and kind of disregards the thinking audience members that might find the flaws without any real trouble. To be honest this movie seems like it would have been great since people love talking animals and they love to laugh at real world problems, particularly human problems, that are attributed to such characters. But all in all the first movie kind of fell flat and didn’t do much for a lot of people simply because it didn’t really have the whole comical, wholesome ideal that some might have wanted and saw its point get seriously muddied as it went along. Now the second one seems to indicate that everything is about to be just fine since Thomas and Bea are tying the knot and, as a result, he will become the father figure that Peter really doesn’t seem to want. It might be okay to think that Peter has gotten over the fact that Thomas’ great uncle killed and ate his father in a pie, but obviously Peter still has his own issues to deal with, which this time around include thinking that he’s something of a bad boy that wants to finally embrace that attitude since Thomas seems to think that he needs to be watched all the time.
Thomas has a point really since Peter is the perfect example of a character that’s both impulsive and not all that wise. He has his moments when he can actually seem intelligent, fun, and altogether rational in a way that might argue against his otherwise hyper and devil-may-care attitude, but it’s a rarity. Too often he’s seen to follow the impulses that come to him all the way to the trouble they bring. Just blaming him for any trouble he might get into isn’t exactly fair, but given his track record it’s not exactly unjustified to think that he might get into trouble of some sort when he’s not being watched or being monitored by those that know how to practice better judgment. In the coming movie though he does seem as though he might get a serious wake-up call in a manner that might make him and Thomas finally learn that giving him a bit of trust now and again would be better than simply blaming him before he does anything. And honestly, from Peter’s standpoint, it might be a good lesson that will make him see that he does have solid and very caring home that he takes for granted way too much. If we learned anything from this trailer at this point it’s largely that there’s still a bit of unrest in the home and Peter and Thomas are still going to be going at it for a good portion of the movie, likely because Peter doesn’t want things to change this much and Thomas simply knows better than to trust Peter to be good one hundred percent of the time.
All in all this movie might be cute for those that enjoyed the first one but it looks like a continuation of the issues that Peter hasn’t quite sorted out yet and a bit of teenage rebellion that might take on the very real form of something that could be construed as problematic for a family movie. As a sequel it already looks as though it’s not going to do as well, but we’ll have to wait and see just how things turn out.
