Don’t blame Kevin Burwick of MovieWeb or anyone else that’s reporting on the X-23 movie that a lot of us would love to see Disney push forward. The idea is great and could gain a lot of ground, which seems to mean that Disney is going to sit on it until they have need of it and will unleash it to fans while claiming that they’ve given them what they want, albeit years later when even our kids are starting to get old. That seems to be the way it goes at times since Disney has this grand idea that they know how to present the material that people want to see and in the time frame that they devise. With the success they’ve seen in the box office it’s kind of hard to say that they don’t know what they’re doing, but there are moments like this that make their decisions questionable at best since Laura Kinney is one of those characters that seems poised and ready to take over for a hero that a lot of people care about and lamented when he finally met his end. But wait, Disney has more in store for us.
If you’re wondering just how or even when the MCU is going to factor in the X-Men and those that are associated with them you might want to read SyFy Wire writer Josh Weiss’s article on how this could possibly happen. It’s not bound to be a smooth transition since from the moment the X-Men came on the scene in their own movie it’s been established that things went off the rails quickly and were allowed to keep doing so since the lack of any real continuity between the team and the Wolverine movies is enough to make one think that bringing X-23 into the mix would only further confuse matters. Plus, given that Laura is a clone of Logan and has his abilities and her own claws, two per hand and one per foot, it’s hard to see just how the MCU would factor this in and make it flow with a reasonable amount of sense that would connect everything at some point. And then there’s the idea of how it all fits into the MCU with the current line of events that have been happening throughout the years, so yeah, it’s kind of crazy to think about but it’s also become commonplace to see Marvel heroes being changed, altered, and being given new back stories so as to fit them into the present narrative. X-23 would be fairly simply to describe and bring in since given Logan’s time as Weapon X it’s not hard to see how those that tortured/experimented on him would get his DNA.
One of the biggest issues to deal with, apart from the continuity issues, is the sheer violence and gore that was so present in Logan. This was what fans were wanting for the longest time since in the comics Logan was known for busting bones, sticking people with his claws, and literally ripping people to pieces when he was engaged in a fight. It’s been seen in the movies that he’s been able to pop his claws and get down to business, but the bloodshed was usually kept to a minimum, even in The Wolverine, since otherwise it couldn’t exactly be marketed to kids. But when Logan was finally released we got to see the down and dirty version of Wolverine that people have been idolizing for so long. He’s not a perfect hero, he’s meaner than hell at times and he’s downright nasty when he gets his blood up, but honestly he’s not the hero that people always want, but he can be the monster that they need. Laura is almost every bit like Logan save for being feminine and a little more nasty in all honesty since she’s got a few more options with her claws and has every bit of the same temperament that Logan has.
In fact it might be best to simply bring X-23 into the mix finally to bring into effect a passing of the torch since Logan has died in the comics and on the big screen at this point, and kind of needs to be given a bit of rest before a reboot or remake is made. Avery Kaplan of CBR makes a few good points as to why Laura could possibly be the next big thing when it comes the title of Wolverine, and it would be hopeful that Disney would listen, but not entirely likely. After all they’ve got their own creative team on the matter and it would seem that they believe that they have a good handle on things, no matter if the rest of us can’t help but roll our eyes over and over again.
