It’s Time for A Change: The New Warriors Should be on the Big Screen

Saying the MCU needs to start branching out is probably the wrong thing to say when you consider the direction they’re staking in the next phase, but given the success of the Arrowverse and DC’s foray into TV you might wonder why the Marvel universe hasn’t tried to expand a bit. Sure, they kind of fell short when it came to a couple of their shows such as Iron Fist and The Defenders, but others have been able to capture the attention of fans and newcomers in a big way. It seems that Marvel wants to dominate the movies a little more however, though with the upcoming Disney+ it would seem that they’re going back to the TV shows with the big-name actors to at least test the waters and see what happens. If they’re going that route however, it might be time to at least try a new concept that we haven’t seen in the movies yet, or on Netflix. The New Warriors could be an engaging and exciting team since they’ve managed to cross over with a LOT of big names in the Marvel universe. They’re also a team that has at least couple of members that could be useful on the big screen.

It seems that a TV show is already in the works for this team, but as seems to be the case the originals aren’t all being considered for the lineup, as it sounds as though Night Thrasher and Speedball are the only two that have made the cut. That leaves out a great wealth of talent in Firestar, Namorita, Nova, Silhouette, Marvel Boy, Rage, and Darkhawk. Like many teams The New Warriors started out pretty simple and then moved along as they decided to band together. Eventually members left and new faces were seen to join the group, but in following the source material it might be extremely interesting to note the first team and use them either as an origin story or simply scrap the idea that’s on the table (no disrespect to Lastalas from CBR but I still don’t know why anyone is convinced that Squirrel Girl is that great) and start fresh with the team that kicked things off. Marvel has been lagging behind when it comes to TV shows and it’s kind of obvious why since they continue to run tired and decaying plot lines when they could be reviving teams and individuals that might bring a shot of life to the Marvel universe when it comes to television.

The team has obviously taken on new members as the years have gone by, but in the interest of reminding people and enlightening some fans as to how they really started it would be interesting and very intriguing to see Marvel finally put forth an original team without reworking the membership or the characters in any way. Sony did this with the X-Men and Disney did this with the Avengers, and it’s been accepted for the most part, but to the fans it’s been kind of a mess trying to anticipate who’s going to come in next. Bringing in the original team would be a breath of fresh air and it would undoubtedly give the older fans something to smile about since like it or not, some of the newer members of the team that have come in throughout the years are downright odd and somehow don’t seem to measure up quite as much. That’s a matter of opinion of course, but all in all it does seem warranted at the moment.

Jesse Schedeen from IGN is another person that’s done his homework on this team and seems to know a little bit about them since he lists off quite a few names that have been on the roster over the years, starting with the original team. If you want the lowdown on them just to get an idea of who they are and what they can do then hear you go:

Night Thrasher

A talented and acrobatic hacker that is super-rich and is an expert fighter, he’s the leader of the team and the guy that pulls them all together. Yes, some have actually likened him to Batman with a skateboard, but he’s a little more complex than that.

Speedball

The kinetically-charged hero that’s been around since the 80s, Speedball is all about kinetic force since this is how his powers work, making him kind of like a human pinball. The more force he generates, the harder he’s going to hit. Oh, and he’s always talking, much to the irritation of his teammates.

Firestar

A mutant that can manipulate microwaves and produce fire much like a few other heroes, she’s a founding member of the group and has been the team’s link in the past to other heroes as well.

Namorita

The cousin of Prince Namor of Atlantis, she’s a little less temperamental than her royal cousin and has a bevy of powers including flight, super strength, durability, and even the capability to turn almost invisible at times.

Nova

Part of the Nova Corps that we’ve seen in Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova can fly at tremendous speeds, is extremely durable, and of course has enhanced strength and can project energy blasts. He could be the cosmic tie-in for the group that would make them even more popular.

Silhouette

An old friend of Night Thrasher’s, she was paralyzed from the waist down during one of their first outings. Since then however she’s learned how to use her infirmity to her advantage and has developed shadow powers that allow her to blend into the shadows and even transport from one to another.

Marvel Boy/Justice

Vance Astrovik is the other mutant on the team that possesses telekinetic abilities and is an original member. He’s also shown up as an original member of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the past, though a lot of people don’t seem to recall this.

The New Warriors need to be brought into the spotlight, with the original team leading the way so that people can see how they REALLY started.
