As Buddy Loans puts it some bands have been together for a long time, sometimes taking breaks but still finding it possible or necessary, or both, to come back and keep on rocking. In every decade we’ve seen bands that have been together for a few years either break up and part ways for various reasons or simply quit, never to be heard from again. Some of them are among the greats, others were one-hit wonders that people though might go somewhere but didn’t realize were woefully unprepared for the fame and the pressure. In some cases though there are bands like the Rolling Stones have been around for so long that a lot of people have come to believe that they’ll be rocking well into their 80s if they’re capable, and since Richards and Jagger are already into their 70s it could very well happen as many at the Rolling Stone think.
Here are a few other bands that might go the distance in their own time.
5. Metallica
This band is so big now that you can look up their bio and how they got their start on Metallica.com, which will tell you a great deal that Metallica fans already know. They might have changed out a couple of members throughout the years but they’ve stayed pretty tight and have amassed a fan base that’s unlike many throughout the metal scene. When thinking back on how simple their start was and how quickly they rose it’s hard to think how they stuck together for so long since other bands have fallen by the wayside throughout the years. But Metallica has managed to stick by each other through thick and thin and it seems reasonable to think that if they stay healthy that they’ll be rocking when they’re old and gray.
4. Aerosmith
Much like the Rolling Stones this is a band that has been through a lot together and has weathered a great deal of turmoil and success throughout the years. It seems pretty natural that such a thing would occur since staying together for decades it would only be natural that fights and arguments would occur now and again. After all human beings aren’t perfect and musicians tend to have an inflated ego at times thanks to the number of fans they tend to gain over the course of their careers. In a band it seems fair to say that some of the members shine and some kind of get pushed to the back now and again.
3. Foo Fighters
This is more hopeful than anything since Dave Grohl managed to find a band that he’s been vibing with for decades now. The big if of course has to do with the idea as to whether Nirvana would still be here if Cobain was still around. That’s a good question and one that can’t be definitively answered to be honest. But it does seem that Dave did manage to help create a sound that was capable of reviving not only his own career but of highlighting something that people eventually took to and couldn’t help but come to love in a big way since the Foo Fighters have been one of the favored bands of the masses for quite a while.
2. U2
These next two seem like classics that are just bound to stick around for as long as they can since they both have been around long enough that they’ve amassed a fan base that’s incredibly diverse and appreciative in their own ways. U2 is a band that many of us grew up with decades ago and a group that has seen their reputation dip just a bit and then surge back, but never fail entirely. The classics never really seem to go out of style and U2 is one of those bands that seems to hang on and weather the changing atmosphere of music fairly well since they helped create the sounds that are so prevalent now.
1. Pearl Jam
Back in the 90s in Seattle the whole idea of grunge and rock was something that seemed poised to take advantage of the legions of disillusioned teens that were crying out for someone to listen to them, and a few major bands stepped up and answered that call. While Nirvana was the undisputed group for a while, Pearl Jam was a lively contender and at this time is one of the few that remain from that era that are still doing fairly well. A lot of us can possibly remember many of their songs and how they got us through tough times as kids, the words of Eddie Vedder seeming to resonate somewhere deep inside that others just couldn’t touch.
Whether or not all of these bands make it to the days when they’re still old and gray and ready to rock is hard to predict, but hardcore fans no doubt hope it will happen.
