The rom/com is still very much alive since people might actually riot if they went away. In the 2000s these types of films were still changing and they still are in the 2010s to be honest since change is what keeps things moving and keeps people interested. What doesn’t change however is that romantic comedies are notoriously goofy in some cases and this is largely because of the romantic aspect. Really, it’s not because of the comedy since people expect comedies to get a bit out of control and even out of touch with reality at certain points. But when people are in love strange things do tend to happen and thanks to either body chemistry or the simple act of saying the wrong thing or not paying attention at the right moment very strange things can happen between people that are in love, want to be in love, or are desperately trying to find love. The movies just accentuate and exaggerate those moments for the entertainment of the audience, which is why a lot of people find them so enjoyable.
Here are a few of the best rom/coms from the 2000s.
5. Love Actually
What’s great about this movie, despite the fact that some people have claimed it’s one of the worst, is that it shows love in various stages and even better it shows how they evolve and move forward during one of the most hectic seasons of the year. Christmas is not a gentle season when it comes to feelings and emotions no matter how much people want it to be, and falling in love around this time can be absolutely magical, but it can also be quite difficult since a lot of people want to know that these good feelings are going to persist and not just be caused by Yuletide cheer. That being said the movie is cute enough and carries enough of a positive message that it’s rather enjoyable.
4. The Proposal
This might be enough to send anyone over the edge. When Andrew is set to go and see his family in Alaska for his grandmother’s birthday his boss suddenly finds out that her visa has expired and she’s going to be deported back to Canada. Instead of facing the music however she announces that she and Andrew, who works for her and can’t stand her, are getting married. This of course would allow her to stay in the US and keep her job, but for Andrew life just got very complicated since he not only has to tell his family the lie that they’re getting married, he has to put up with the one woman he absolutely cannot stomach for an entire weekend. But as things go along the two start to discover there is more about each of them that they never knew, and something begins to blossom between them.
3. Knocked Up
You might say that this could only happen in a movie and you might be right. No one would imagine that someone like Seth Rogen could hook up with a woman like Katherine Heigl and make it seem real, but this movie did. Getting on with the story however the two realize she’s pregnant sometime after their drunken one-night stand and as it goes, Rogen’s character has to finally learn how to grow up and stop being the man-child while Heigl’s character has to accept that he’s willing to stay in the picture and be a part of their child’s life, even if she tries to push him away from time to time.
2. Hitch
The one line that stands out in this movie is this: “Basic principles…there aren’t any.” Nothing could be more true when it comes to how people feel about one another, as each and every relationship is bound to be different and the dynamics between men and women are going to change with each new couple. But Hitch is definitely a genius when it comes to helping people get out of their own way in order to be who they want to be around those they’re trying to attract. He does a lot of good for a number of people, but when it comes to his own love life he comes to learn that he’s just as simple as anyone else in terms of his feelings.
1. The 40-Year-Old Virgin
The funny thing about sex is that you have no idea what you’re missing if you’ve never had it, and therefore there’s not a lot of room for regret. When Andy reveals he’s a virgin though it becomes the mission of his friends/coworkers to get him to experience what they think he’s been missing. What they don’t realize however is that Andy is a lot stronger than he thinks he is, especially when he chooses not to listen to them as often.
Romantic comedies have gotten a lot goofier over the years, but deep down they still carry a very strong message that’s been adjusted for each era.
