Experiences like those that Glen Campbell had when he was younger make you feel as though you missed out on something in your childhood, but given that Glen had a very musical family and started out at a young age it just seems that he was one of those folks that was destined to do something great with his career since the talent and the desire, as well as the support, was there from the start. At one point he played in his uncle’s band to get started and then he formed his own group. From that point on he still had to work pretty hard to get to where he wanted to be, and at one point his label was thinking about cutting him loose. But then he found the help he needed and his career got on the roll that allowed him to become a big name that audiences would flock to. It took a little while, but he finally reached the place he needed to be.
Here are a few of his songs as they were used in TV and movies.
5. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 – Southern Nights
It’s a little odd to hear older songs in a movie like this but then you have to think that Peter was taken by Yondu when he was still a boy and his taste in music was rooted back in the past. Starlord’s taste in music isn’t all that bad really but it was still kind of a surprise that he still had a walkman in a movie that’s based on modern times, as is evidenced by the fact that the MCU kept the Guardians around to show up in Infinity War. Just imagine if Starlord was forced to update his music selections from the past few decades. Do you think he’d still go with the same tracks?
4. War on Everyone – Rhinestone Cowboy
Movies about bad cops often turn into movies about worse cops as the two in this movie are decidedly dirty and seem to feel the need to just go to war with anyone in their way as is the commonality of many such movies. Keeping up with the number of characters in this film isn’t too hard but it is a movie that you might want to watch from front to back since just walking into a scene you might have no idea what’s going on. Just know that it deals with a lot of crooked stuff and two cops that aren’t afraid to cross the line more than once in order to get what they need and make sure that the people they’re ripping off won’t come after them.
3. The Simpsons – Wichita Lineman
There is a long, LONG list of celebrities and songs that have been used on The Simpsons in its long and storied tale on TV, and most of them have been known to many of the people that have watched it throughout the years. Now and then a snippet will come on, or will be referenced, or will somehow be inserted into the show for people to watch for, listen for, and enjoy. The program has incorporated so many different icons that it would be hard to list them all in one continual document without missing at least a couple. But when it’s made obvious like this it’s really hard to miss.
2. True Grit – True Grit
A great number of people would likely prefer this version of the movie to the version that featured Jeff Bridges as it was received a lot better it would seem and John Wayne was considered to be a much better Rooster Cogburn. The story goes that a young woman whose father was murdered seeks justice by way of hiring Cogburn to track down the traitorous hired hand that did the killing, and goes with him despite his protests. As they make their way ever closer to their intended target Cogburn proves to be just as irascible as he appears and is less than friendly to most. But in the end he does prove to be the best choice she could have made.
1. High School High – Rhinestone Cowboy
There was a time when Jon Lovitz was absolutely hilarious. Well to be honest he’s still funny but back in these days he was still young enough that he could keep up the comedy for an entire movie without having to be a supporting character. But in this movie he plays a high school teacher that’s attempting to do about the same thing that Michelle Pfieffer did in Dangerous Minds, but in a much more comedic way since this movie is little more than a spoof and yet is about as funny as it gets. As far as spoof movies go it was actually hilarious and kind of helped to pave the way for more spoofs.
Glen Campbell was a great man in his heyday and is considered a legend at this point.
