Remember Slipknot from Suicide Squad? No? Well don’t feel too bad, those that didn’t know enough about the villain missed out as much as anyone since the character got his head blown off pretty quickly during the mission that gave them their name. It’s kind of maddening that he got tricked by one of the least-liked members of the group, Captain Boomerang, but then again if you go back in his actual history in DC comics his character is pretty gullible. Still, it seems like he’d be an interesting character to see in his own solo movie since he wasn’t a dummy. In fact it’s safe to say that he’s one of the smartest of the bunch, right up until he decides to test Flagg and see if that implanted device is for real or not. Whoever watched the movie knows how that went, but what they don’t know is that Slipknot could have possibly been a bigger part of the group than he was allowed to be.
Here are just a few things you might want to know about the character that was tossed aside in the movie.
In the comics it was his arm that got blown off by the device.
Of course the Suicide Squad was different in the comics, as the movies tend to take a lot of artistic license with characters and make them almost unrecognizable at times. But with Slipknot they made the mistake of implanting the explosive devices in their necks, instead of their arms as they did in the comics. He was still tricked by Captain Boomerang into going beyond the range of the device that was keeping the explosive from detonating, but instead of being killed outright he lost his arm and a lot of blood, but he survived. Later on he would be given a cybernetic arm that would serve in place of his original one, but that too was damaged in a fight. Slipknot is supposed to be one of the characters that is actually pretty cool since he’s a highly fit individual that can do a lot of things the average person can’t, but he’s also been taken down by his own lack of common sense as well as other villains and superheros. That alone could make him into kind of a sympathetic character that might be fun to watch.
He was a master assassin.
You might go so far as to say that there are master assassin’s by the dozens in the comics, and you wouldn’t be wrong. But those that are given leave to become noted characters are those that are either without scruples or are just that good and can be labeled as being some of the best. Slipknot wasn’t quite at the same level as Deathstroke, okay he wasn’t even close, but he was far and away better than many of those in the same profession. His exploits aren’t nearly as interesting as some characters, but that’s more because he was never given much of a chance to be the star and was always pushed to the back rather than given his chance to be someone that could be taken seriously. Suicide Squad didn’t exactly do much better when it came to his character, as it gave the other members a great time to shine and didn’t think Slipknot was worth much more than a handful of minutes and a few decent scenes. I’d day DC owes him a chance at least.
He lost his head in the comics and the movie.
So we already know how he lost his head in the movie, but he lost his head in the comic too, so maybe this was a way to condense the life of the notorious villain and not allow him to drag out any further into the DCEU. Maybe, just maybe they didn’t want him taking up any more time, which makes it a bit of a conspiracy against a character that, quite honestly, isn’t really on the same level as a lot of the others. Going forward Slipknot might not have been among the best prospects of bringing the DCEU back to life, but now that Cavill and Affleck seem to be stepping away from the sinking ship that is the DCEU it might be time to start thinking about origin stories, which Slipknot could help provide since he’s been waylaid by some of the best in the past.
Whether Adam Beach would come back for an origin story is hard to say since he kind of got short-changed in Suicide Squad and only given so much screen time. But if they could get him back or find someone that looks like him but is just a little younger it could possibly work. Given that the big names are getting a bit tiresome it might be time for the DCEU to climb DOWN the ladder instead of reaching for the stars so often.
