The first batch of Emmys have been awarded during the Creative Arts ceremony that happened last Saturday night. Another ceremony will be held on the following night to award the rest of the below-the-line categories. For the list of winners, you can check it on this link. I’m going to share my reactions about the winners and what do they mean for the main ceremony.
It’s a historic night as all actors who won in the guest acting categories are people of color. In the Comedy Guest Actress, as expected, Tiffany Haddish won for hosting Saturday Night Live. There was no surprise there. Then, the Drama Guest Actor was awarded to Ron Cephas Jones for This Is Us. It was a surprise as most people have been predicting Cameron Britton to win. He was nominated last year in the supporting side. I guess his win is more like making up for losing last year. Cephas Jones’ win might be a good news to Sterling K. Brown. In the Drama Guest Actress category, Samira Wiley won for The Handmaid’s Tale. To clarify, the reason why she is on guest is because she only appeared in four episodes during the second season. Because of the win, the show has won every acting category that they’ve been nominated so far. This is a sign of another possible sweep of the show in the main ceremony. In the Comedy Guest Actor, Katt Williams surprisingly won for his guest role on Atlanta. His win is also a good sign for the other acting nominations of the show in the main ceremony.
Black Mirror: USS Callister won in the Best Television Movie category. It is an expected win. Most people might be surprised that it is contending on this category but it’s eligible. A lot of people in the internet are also happy that Rick and Morty won the Best Animated Program category. In the casting categories, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Crown, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story won in comedy, drama, and limited series or series, respectively. The casting categories are usually considered as indicators of possible winners in the main ceremony especially in the series categories. You might have to watch out for them when you do your predictions.
Overall, Game of Thrones lead the night with seven wins, followed by The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story with four wins. Atlanta, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Black Mirror: USS Callister, and Westworld each won with three awards. So what do they all mean for the main ceremony? In the drama side, it shows that The Crown should now be considered as a frontrunner in the Outstanding Drama Series category. We should take it seriously in our predictions. Game of Thrones might have won a lot of awards, but it’s a show with a lot of visual effects and technicalities which made it as the kind of show that will win those categories. In the comedy side, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel appears to be a solid frontrunner. It was able to beat Atlanta in all of their wins. Meanwhile, in all Atlanta wins, none of them are against The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. In the limited series or movie side, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story also appears to be a solid frontrunner. It was able to win against Godless in its two wins. Godless‘ only win is not against the aforementioned show.
I’ve been having a hard time predicting the Emmys for the past few weeks because the competition is so tight. This gave me an idea on the possible winners during the main ceremony, and you should too. The competition became more competitive and exciting. We can’t wait for the main ceremony this coming September 17.
