This year’s contenders on the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category are consists of three previous winners and four previous nominees. One of them is The Fonz. One of them is a respected stand-up comedian. One of them is nominated for impersonating Trump. This is an interesting category and we can’t wait to find out this September 17 if last year’s winner, Alec Baldwin, will reclaim the glory or someone will dethrone him. Here’s my analysis and predictions in this category.
Louie Anderson – Baskets
Louie Anderson plays the role of Christine Baskets. This is his third consecutive nomination for the show and he won on his first nod. He submitted the episode “Thanksgiving.” Will he win again? Maybe. Since he has won already, he is on the radar and repeat wins usually happens at the Emmys. His performance continues to get acclaim from the critics and audience. He is also a veteran and a well-respected comedian. The downside is that it’s the show’s only nomination and the voters might decide to not give him the trophy again and give chance to others.
Alec Baldwin – Saturday Night Live
Alec Baldwin plays the role of President Donald Trump. This is his second consecutive nomination for the show and he won last year. He also previously won twice for his performance on 30 Rock. He submitted the Donald Glover-hosted episode. Will he win again? Not highly likely. Even though he’s the defending champion in this category, the buzz regarding his Trump impersonation went down this season. He also only appeared in one sketch during the episode that he submitted and that might bother the voters. Also, he might vote-split with co-star Kenan Thompson. But, if the voters still can’t get over his Trump impersonation, he might still reclaim the glory.
Tituss Burgess – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tituss Burgess plays the role of Titus Andromedon. This is his fourth consecutive nomination. He submitted the episode “Kimmy and the Beest!.” Will he win? Maybe. He has the overdue factor since this is his fourth nod and the voters might finally honor him. He is also consistently the fan favorite of the show. The downside is that the show has only two nominations and his chances are not stronger given how competitive the category is. If he campaigned enough, he might surprise us come Emmy night.
Brian Tyree Henry – Atlanta
Brian Tyree Henry plays the role of Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles. This is his first nomination for the show. He got nominated last year for his guest role on This Is Us. He submitted the episode “Woods.” Will he win? Possibly. The show is the most nominated comedy program this year and that increases his chance to win. He is also a fan favorite and his episode submission centers mostly on his character. The downside is that his performance is not very comedic and that might turn off the voters.
Tony Shalhoub – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Tony Shalhoub plays the role of Abe Weissman. This is his first nomination for the show. He previously won thrice for his performance on Monk. He submitted the season finale episode “Thank You and Good Night.” Will he win? Maybe. He has won before which means that he is on the radar. He is also part of the show that is currently considered a frontrunner on Outstanding Comedy Series category. He is a veteran and a well-respected actor in the industry. The downside is that his performance is not usually the highlight on the show and the voters might opt to vote the other nominees instead.
Kenan Thompson – Saturday Night Live
Kenan Thompson plays various characters in the show. This is his first acting nomination for the show and he got nominated last year for co-writing a song. He submitted the John Mulaney-hosted episode. Will he win? Maybe. He is currently the longest-serving cast member on the show and he finally got nominated this year so there’s already the overdue factor. He is also a favorite on the show. The downside is that this is a competitive category and the voters might prefer other nominees in this category. He might also vote-split with co-star Alec Baldwin.
Henry Winkler – Barry
Henry Winkler plays the role of Gene Cousineau. This is his first nomination for the show. He previously earned nominations for his performances on Happy Days and his guest role on The Practice. He submitted the episode “Chapter Four: Commit…to YOU.” Will he win? Possibly. He hasn’t won a Primetime Emmy yet on his career so he already has the overdue factor. He played one of the most iconic television characters and, if the voters found out that he doesn’t have a trophy yet, they might finally honor him. He is also playing a character who is in the showbiz industry and that is usually appealing to the voters. The downside is that the competition is very competitive and he might not be the one that the voters prefer.
VERDICT: My prediction right now is Henry Winkler of Barry. He has the overdue factor and I heard that it has been the narrative of his campaign. I’ve also heard that a lot of voters voted for him. It would be surprising for me if he will not win.
