Whatever Happened to the Cast of Some Kind of Wonderful?

There is rarely a day in which I am reminded that time waits for no man. It always seems to be something or someone ready to remind me of just how long I have been on this planet. I recently came across a post that talked about the fact that the movie Some Kind of Wonderful premiered 31 years ago. Are you kidding me? For those people under the age of 50 who don’t have a clue of what I am talking about, Some Kind of Wonderful Was a Teenage Cult Classic that was written by John Hughes and direct by Howard Deutch. The story is pulled from a classic storyline in which the little-known kid develops a crush on the popular kid and worlds collide.

When you are reminded of movies like this you ask yourself whatever happened to the actors and actresses that played in those roles? What are they doing now? Were they one-hit wonders? I decided to conduct a little research to determine what the cast is up to. Here are the results.

7. Jane Elliot – Carol Nelson

Jane Elliot played the role of Carol Nelson, Keith’s mother. She played a vital role in the subplot that focused on Keith not wanted to attend college. Early in her career, Elliot was known for sharing the screen with Elvis Presley. Jane has played a prominent role in the Daytime Soap Opera carousel and has been on the famed General Hospital as Tracy Quartermaine since 1978. She has even won a Daytime Emmy Award for her Role as Tracy Quartermaine.

6. Candace Cameron — Cindy Nelson

In the movie, Keith also had two little sisters. His youngest sister, Cindy, is played by child star Candace Cameron. When Candace took the role of Cindy, she was only 10, but it would not be her last role in acting. She is the younger sister of Kirk Cameron, who was a teenage heartthrob during the 1980s and a star of the sitcom Growing Pains. Unless you are completely separated from the world of Entertainment, you are probably aware of the fact that Candace found success as DJ Tanner on Full House and Now on Fuller House.

5. Maddie Corman — Laura Nelson

Maddie played Keith’s another sister, Laura. With Laura being closer to Keith in age, they got on each other’s nerves in the movie. Maddie has done a great job at parlaying the acclaim she experienced in this movie into long-term success. She has starred in multiple films that include Maid in Manhattan, Swingers, and Begin Again. She has also had a very successful television career, appearing on shows like Smash, Law & Order SVU, and Frasier.

4. John Ashton — Cliff Nelson

If you haven’t noticed, the top stars of this movie were heavily influenced by the role of the main character, Keith Nelson. John Ashton played Keith’s father. John would have some successful roles in the years to come, including playing the role of a not-so-bright bounty hunter in Midnight Run. He would also have a supporting role in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. He is still currently acting, and when he is not working he is enjoying his second love, golf.

3. Craig Sheffer — Hardy Jenns

The center of Keith’s world is his fixation on Amanda Jones, but Amanda has a boyfriend – a wealthy cheating boyfriend that is highly narcissistic. Obviously, once Keith begins pursuing Amanda, Hardy gets jealous and possessive to no avail. Since his role as Hardy Jenns, Sheffers’ talent and good looks have landed him in a wide range of roles. He has played opposite Brad Pitt in A River Runs Through It. He was also very popular in the television series One Tree Hill – playing the role of Keith Scott.

2. Mary Stuart Masterson — Watts

Do we really need to visit this particular question about the subsequent career of Mary Stuart Masterson? If you did not see the movie, here is a little secret. Masterson steals the entire light on the show. I will not spoil it for you if you have not seen it, and if you have you know what I am talking about. Masterson not only enjoyed a reasonably successful career as an actor, with movies like Fried Green Tomatoes, but she has also worked behind the camera – directing the 2007 film The Cake Eaters, which starred Kristen Stewart before the Twilight fame.

1. Eric Stoltz — Keith Nelson

This was not Eric’s first exposure. He had an acclaimed billing when he played a disfigured teen in the film drama Mask. Some of the exposure was not good when he was replaced by Michael J. Fox less than a month into shooting Back to the Future. Stoltz has had a great run since SKOW was released 31 years ago. He was in the cult classic Pulp Fiction, Caprica, The Waterdance, Killing Zoe and more. He has two films on deck in which he will be working behind the camera.
