20 Anticipated Video Games That Could Live up to Their Hype

Numerous games are made on a regular basis. However, no more than a small number of these games will manage to capture the interest of a significant number of people. Unfortunately, an even smaller number of these games will actually manage to live up to the hype built up by their marketing materials, which is why interested individuals should pay that much more attention to those with the true potential to do so.

Here are 20 video games that could live up to their hype:

Anthem

Bioware has a reputation for making successful RPGs. Now, it is stepping out of its comfort zone with its current project Anthem, which will be an open world adventure game with RPG elements. In part, this is risky because this is a niche of the market with established competitors, meaning that it will be an uphill struggle. However, it should also be noted that Bioware is on thin ice because of the failure that was Mass Effect: Andromeda, meaning that it is no exaggeration to say that its fate could be resting on Anthem‘s eventual reception. After all, this wouldn’t be the first time that EA has shut down a once-successful studio, meaning that something similar happening to Bioware is far from being unthinkable.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is an action-adventure game that will be released at some point in the near future. To be more exact, it is what is called a Metroidvania game, which makes sense because the head of the team is Igarashi Koji, who led the Castlevania franchise at one point in time. Regardless, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is interesting because it is one of the better-known indie projects to have been funded by platforms such as Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. As a result, if it proves to be successful, it could be a further sign of the movement of the game industry as a whole towards increased democratization. Of course, it should also come as welcome news to those who love the 2D installments in the Castlevania franchise, particularly since they have understandable reasons to be concerned about its fate.

Call of Cthulhu

H.P. Lovecraft had some serious issues even for a person of his times, but there can be no doubt about the fact that he had a huge influence on speculative fiction, not least because he was writing in a time when speculative fiction was still a single genre rather than a collection of separate but still connected genres. As a result, H.P. Lovecraft has influenced a lot of subsequent works, though most aren’t as direct as Call of Cthulhu, a tabletop RPG that was named for the story of the same name. Now, there is to be a game called Call of Cthulu, which will be based on not just the story but also the tabletop RPG, meaning that it is not unreasonable to suspect that it will cover a great deal more than just Deep One hybrids in New England. With that said, it remains to be seen how well Call of Cthulhu will be able to handle the psychological sort of horror that is so crucial to Lovecraftian horror, which will be the single factor that will either make or break the game.

Code Vein

Dark Souls wasn’t the game that established its genre, but it did a great deal to popularize it in the gaming market, which has resulted in a number of other games making use of similar formulas. One example is the upcoming Code Vein, which is best described as an anime version of Dark Souls, though it should be mentioned that its story isn’t that much brighter. In short, most of the human species is dead, while most of the survivors have survived by turning themselves into vampires. Unfortunately, there are a couple of problems with this situation. One, said vampires are reliant on human blood for their continuing survival, which has become a rather rare commodity to say the least. Two, said vampires can degenerate under certain circumstances, thus explaining the source of the often horrific monsters in the setting. On top of this, Code Vein promises some significant gameplay changes as well, with an excellent example being able to go through the stages with an AI-controlled companion.

Crackdown 3

Like its name states, Crackdown 3 will be the newest installment in the Crackdown franchise, which consist of action-adventure games in open world settings. Once more, interested individuals can expect to take control of a super-powered character who will have to overcome different organizations controlling different portions of a futuristic city-scape. However, Crackdown 3 will possess a number of changes that should promise even more spectacular gameplay, with examples ranging from even more destructible environments to a new system that will enable the organizations to go after the player once they have caught their attention in a bad way. Something that should make the result that much more interesting.

Death Stranding

Most gamers should be familiar with the Metal Gear franchise to some extent, not least because it is such a long-standing pillar of the gaming industry. As a result, there are a lot of people who will have heard about the falling out between Konami and Kojima Hideo, which seems to have been sparked by tensions that rose as a result of the development of Metal Gear Solid V. Whatever the case, the falling out resulted in Kojima’s parting of ways with Konami, though not with the gaming industry as a whole. For proof, look no further than the fact that the now independent Kojima Productions is set to release Death Stranding, which sounds more than a little bit strange but promises to provide interested individuals with exactly what they love about Kojima-headed games.

Extinction

Primarily, most people will be familiar with Iron Galaxy Studios because of its involvement in making Killer Instinct under the guidance of Ken Lobb. However, it should be noted that Iron Galaxy Studios does make its own games as well in addition to its contract-work, as shown by a new game called Extinction. People who have watched Attack on Titan should find the premise more than a little bit familiar, seeing as how Extinction will be focused on people fighting giant monsters with the use of nothing but a sword as well as a set of grappling hooks. With that said, originality doesn’t matter so much as the execution of a particular premise. So far, the marketing materials that have been released for Extinction are making it looking promising, but it remains to be seen whether it will be able to live up to that promise or not, which won’t be known until it comes out.

God of War

The God of War franchise is making a return with a new game called God of War, which is a rather confusing name for long-time fans to say the least. With that said, when it comes to content, there can be no doubt about the fact that this game promises to be very different from its predecessor with the same name. After all, the first generation of God of War games took place in a setting based on Greek mythology, whereas the second generation of God of War games took place in a setting based on Norse mythology. However, what is even more interesting is that the new God of War game will be following a much-changed Kratos who is doing his best to be a good father to his son, which should come as welcome news to those who loved the God of War franchise’s gameplay but found its protagonist to be unlikable.

Jurassic World Evolution

There are a number of directions that a game based on the Jurassic Park franchise could’ve gone. However, Jurassic World Evolution has made a rather unorthodox choice that is nonetheless more intriguing because of it, as shown by the fact that it will be a business simulation game. In other words, Jurassic World Evolution will give players the chance to build their own Jurassic Park stuffed full of the dinosaurs seen in the Jurassic Park movies. However, the game won’t be limited to building the park and running the park, seeing as how it will have other features such as claiming the contents of dig sites and developing new dinosaurs based on those contents. As a result, it is no exaggeration to say that Jurassic World Evolution sounds like it might be offering the comprehensive experience of building a park like the ones seen in the Jurassic Park movies.

Kingdom Hearts 3

In recent times, it can seem as though Disney possesses the Midas Touch. For proof, look no further than the fact that it is earning billions and billions at the box office, not under exceptional circumstances but rather as a matter of routine. As a result, this provides interested individuals with even more reasons to be excited about Kingdom Hearts 3, which is the continuation of the collaboration between Disney and Square Enix. After all, Kingdom Hearts 3 is bound to be similar to its predecessors by offering the return of old favorites as well as the introduction of new characters, which should go well with its looks, its gameplay, and its overall atmosphere. For that matter, while the Kingdom Hearts franchise was never abandoned, Kingdom Hearts 2 was released in 2005, meaning that there is a lot of pent-up excitement that promises to be unleashed soon.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

There have been both good Spider-Man games and bad Spider-Man games. As a result, there is a fair amount of tension from waiting to see which one the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man will prove to be in the end. With that said, this particular game promises a unique premise at the very least, seeing as how it will be based on the adventures of an older, more experienced Peter Parker rather than the one just starting out. This is possible because Marvel’s Spider-Man won’t be based on a preexisting part of the Spider-Man franchise. Instead, it will be its own thing, while still drawing plenty of inspiration from the source material that has preceded it. Curiously, it seems as though the main villain of the game will be Mister Negative, a Chinese-American Jekyll and Hyde whose good side runs shelters for those who are in need while his bad side leads a gang called the Inner Demons in the vicious struggle for total control of NYC’s criminal underworld.

Mega Man 11

Mega Man remains one of the best-known characters out there for gamers, which makes sense considering the sheer number of Mega Man games that have been released over the decades. Unfortunately, that pace seems to have slowed down in recent times, which explains why so many people pinned their hopes on Mighty No. 9, which promised to be a spiritual successor to its famous predecessor. It is a real shame that those hopes were dashed, but it should be mentioned that it might be premature to give up, seeing as how there will be a Mega Man 11 after all. With that said, it is important to note that Mega Man 11 will be Mega Man 11, meaning that it will be a follow-up to the first Mega Man series of games rather than either the Mega Man X series or one of the other series collected under the Mega Man franchise.

Metro: Exodus

The Witcher isn’t the sole piece of media from Eastern Europe to become prominent in the West through video games in recent times. One other example can be found in the Metro franchise, which consists of first-person shooters based on a collection of works about a post-apocalyptic Moscow. Metro: Exodus will be the third installment in said franchise, meaning that it will be a further refinement on the existing formula that has proven to be so successful. As a result, interested individuals can expect an outstanding first-person shooter with stealth elements as well as survival horror elements, coming from going up against not just other humans but also mutated creatures spawned by the nuclear war that ended the world. It is interesting to note that Metro: Exodus will see the protagonist Artyom venturing beyond the metro system, meaning that it will offer a wider range of environments as well.

Red Dead Redemption 2

People who play a lot of action-adventure games shouldn’t need an introduction to Rockstar Games, which specializes in making such products. One of its upcoming action-adventure games is Red Dead Redemption 2, which will be the prequel to Red Dead Redemption as well as the third installment in the western-themed franchise. Curiously, Red Dead Redemption 2 has been delayed not once but twice, which is something that should stir up mixed feelings in interested individuals. On the one hand, it suggests that something has gone wrong; on the other hand, the delays mean that Rockstar Games is serious about turning out an outstanding product, meaning that it is not unreasonable to think that they might mean a better game in the long run.

Skull & Bones

Pirates have been a huge part of pop culture for centuries and centuries. However, there haven’t been a lot of good pirate games in recent times. Fortunately, Ubisoft is in the process of making a tactical action game called Skull & Bones, which will provide the player with the chance to sail the Indian Ocean with a customized pirate captain of their choice. Given the premise, it should come as no surprise to learn that much of the mechanics of Skull & Bones will be based on those of Assassin’s Creed IV, which was set during the Golden Age of Piracy. As a result, those who liked the naval battles in that particular game should keep a watchful eye out for further news on Skull & Bones, which is being worked on by Ubisoft Singapore.

Soul Calibur VI

Soul Calibur VI will be the next 3D fighter in the Soul Calibur franchise. Mechanics-wise, it promises to be much the same as its predecessors, though it has been mentioned that it will be featuring a new way for players to defend when locked in combat. Meanwhile, it has been revealed that a lot of old favorites will be making a return in Soul Calibur VI, while some new faces will be joining the franchise as well. In particular, some people might be excited by the news that Geralt from The Witcher franchise will be making an appearance, serving as a guest fighter in much the same manner as Ezio, Darth Vader, and Yoda. Overall, Soul Calibur VI looks like it will be offering more of the same 3D combat as its predecessors, which isn’t bad news because it is clear that its predecessors have amassed the franchise a lot of devoted fans.

System Shock

System Shock was something of a legend. For proof, look no further than the fact that it is being remade in spite of the fact that the first game came out in 1994, which was made possible by the support of fans through Kickstarter. For those who have no clue what the fuss is about, System Shock was centered on the efforts of a hacker seeking to overcome an evil AI named SHODAN on a space station set in the future. The result was a game that won much praise because of its physics simulation, immersive environments, and a wide range of other factors that went on to exert much influence over the genre of shooters as a whole.

Vampyr

Vampyr is an action RPG that will, perhaps unsurprisingly, star a doctor who has been turned into a vampire, which is resulting in a fair amount of internal struggle because of the conflict between his vampiric impulses and his Hippocratic Oath as a doctor. Fortunately, Vampyr is interesting in that it promises that the player won’t have to kill to complete the game, which should come as welcome news to those who are hoping that the doctor will be able to make it through without compromising on his morals. With that said, Vampyr is also interesting in that it will be situated in London at the time of the Spanish Flu, which doesn’t get talked about much but is notable for being a flu epidemic that killed somewhere between 50 and 100 million people, meaning somewhere between 3 and 5 percent of the entire world’s population. In other words, the Spanish Flu killed more people in a shorter period of time than the First World War, which is a relevant comparison because it started up in 1918.

We Happy Few

We Happy Few is an excellent example of a game that combines an interesting premise with an interesting setting. In short, it is a survival and exploration game that will require the player to guide one of three characters through the process of completing something important to them in the city of Wellington Wells before escaping ahead of its imminent collapse. However, what is just as interesting is the fact that We Happy Few is set in a dystopian timeline in which the residents of Wellington Wells did something so terrible that they actually invented a drug to help them forget what had happened. As a result, everything in the game is a result of this curious choice, which provides interested individuals with a lot of incentive to play so that they can find out what happened for themselves.

Yoshi

Yoshi is an upcoming game for the Nintendo Switch that will be starring the cartoon dinosaur of the same name. Of course, Yoshi games being Yoshi games, it should come as no surprise to learn that this particular game will have a stand-out characteristic that will distinguish it from its counterparts. For example, while Yoshi will be featuring 3D characters moving on 2D stages, the player can see behind objects on the screen by changing the perspective of the camera. Otherwise, Yoshi will be much the same as its predecessors, which is more than enough to make it a promising game.
